PS - The talk about the shows 'woke' air is already tiresome. So much fuss about the Doctor saying 'is that what I am now?' when he mentions a guy being 'hot'. It's a weird fixation anyway as the Ninth Doctor already covered being past Earth definitions of sexuality and the Thirteenth already crushed with Yasmine so it's not new ground so should shock no-one.

The Giggle
This was a brisk and fun episode, rattling along with Neil Patrick Harris hamming it up well as the Toymaker. They've definitely set out their stall for introducing heavier fantasy into the show and everyone was on their A-game. Gatwa made good work of his brief time on screen with them using the special to line up a refresh and letting go of the past 18 years story but in a logical manner. Less logical was the regeneration which launched us deep into RTD era nonsense. He's great at making the emotional stakes land but alod adores a cop out. Perhaps the biggest issue and the reason why I haven't scored any of the specials as 'great' is that whilst they are good they don't land as well as the shows finest, I think a big part of that is that Tennant's return is too brief. The regeneration of Whittaker through to the arrival of Gatwa literally spans a 72 hour window at the most, we needed more time with the 14th Doctor to build up the story they were going for here. But as a palate cleanser for the future they certainly did their job.

The Church on Ruby Road
Very light and very much just a bit of throwaway Xmas fun, it felt like wrapping yourself in a warm nostalgia blanket when the early seeds started to pop up signposting future mysteries etc, the hallmark of the prior peak era of the show. Gatwa is very clearly going to nail the role, we're very slowly nudging the kids through the Capaldi era and the difference is stark as Gatwa is just so much more effortless yet immediately has that emotional core that kept Eccleston, Tennant and Smith easily invested into even though you deep down know the character is bullet proof. Ruby, kind of mid, immediately more likeable than the last few years companions but I've read comparisons about her feeling like a cut price Clara and there was a bit of that vibe however even more than Gatwa it was her intro ep so there's a long road to see how things pan out. I could have really, really.... really done without the Doctor and Ruby singing which is something we're apparently going to be getting more of. Overall it was fine, probably the weakest of the four episodes but still a promising tonic to most of the past ten years.

Currently caning it through the first season of McCoy's tenure as The Doctor.
Funny watching it BITD, you'd wait a week to watch each 25 minute episode and I'm watching them one after the other at 1.5x speed.
They make good use with the limited budget, but it's still pretty creaky pre-CGI.
It's a nostalgic treat, though.Comment
