    Digital Stream: Television News

We already have a Netflix discussion thread however times are changing just as fast as they did back when Netflix first rolled itself out and increasingly the streaming giant is facing the aggressive rise of competitors. From Youtube Red to the likes of Amazon and the three massive planned Disney streaming channels, we're looking at a huge increase in original streamed content that threatens to fracture the online dream of a single all in one access account.

So, this thread acts as a central news thread covering all these streaming sites in a similar way to how the Neverending Horror thread works.

    First up:

This week saw the launch of Studio L, Lionsgate’s new offshoot which is focused primarily on creating digital content aimed at younger audiences. Studio L already has three indie film projects set for release this spring, but it’s what they’re developing next that has much of the attention – the most notable being a potential […]

Lionsgate has set up a new studio called Studio L aimed at creating digital series that they will develop then sell to competing services. One of the first projects they are developing is Blair Witch the series.

The planned TV series based on Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” saga has found a new home with Amazon picking up the rights to the series. Last year Amazon closed a massive deal for a TV series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” books, but that hasn’t stopped them picking up further […]

Meanwhile, Amazon have now taken over development of the long gestating Dark Tower series. Elba has ruled himself out of the series anyway but it seems likely to ignore the recently failed movie and be a reboot of the property.

    Someone made a decision there.

Someone at Lionsgate was trying to put together a press-release for their new streaming channel, and they decided their best foot forward was the Blair Witch franchise.

Blair Witch was rubbish. There were people sleeping in the cinema.

Heck, there were people sleeping in the movie itself by the end of it. One guy was just propped up in the corner snoring away and the other one decided to have a nap while she was filming.

I imagine pretty soon we'll be paying monthly fees similar to what Sky and others cost after signing up to multiple services to watch what we want.

At least they aren't (yet) flooded with advertising like Sky. The number of adverts on broadcast TV just seems insane in 2018.

I wonder how much Sky would cost without adverts subsidising the fees.

It's nuts isn't it that you pay for a service and they still obtrusively advertise!

Bob Iger Talks Disney Streaming Plans
Disney chief Bob Iger has spoken more this week about the company’s planned direct-to-consumer streaming service. Appearing at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Iger says the launch of ESPN Plus a month from now (which offers a version of the sports network for $4.99 a month) will be the beginning of a […]

"Disney chief Bob Iger has spoken more this week about the company’s planned direct-to-consumer streaming service.

Appearing at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Iger says the launch of ESPN Plus a month from now (which offers a version of the sports network for $4.99 a month) will be the beginning of a key cycle for the company. Iger confirms there will be tiered pricing as rights to top-tier sports are solidified and customers will be able to buy seasons, teams, weekends.

It’s the entertainment service launching next year though that everyone’s wondering about. Iger says that disruption to the TV ecosystem have had a “faster and a more profound impact than we ever expected” and so now they plan to “participate in the very business that is doing the disrupting.”

To that end, the studio plans to have four to five original series and another four to five original movies ready for its planned launch in late 2019. He adds: “we’ll have a better sense of what kind of volume we can provide after the Fox transaction closes.”"

If Disney get this right, Netflix should be very concerned for once.

Apple has given a straight-to-series order to a psychological thriller series from writer Tony Basgallop (“Berlin Station,” “Hotel Babylon,” “24: Legacy”) which has M. Night Shyamalan onboard to executive produce. The half-hour series has received a ten-episode order, with Shyamalan set to direct the first episode. Specifics of the story are under wraps. Could be interesting. M. Night Shyamalamadingdong can produce both classics and stinkers, so something he's not made yet is like Schrodinger's Cat.

My favourite of the comments was:
"At the end it will turn out that... it was a Netflix show the whole time."
