Forbes has an article today which is bad doomsday stuff about Netflix's future but they raise one interesting aspect which is that Netflix is currently nearly $11bn in debt and that is rising by around 59% per year.

Netflix's chief advantage currently isn't its content, it's its distribution model. The way modern conglomerate business works means that simply losing Warner Bros and Disney content will cause massive damage to Netflix and the company simply cannot compete on a content level no matter how much debt it ploughs into the problem. With rival services coming in at half the price as well it means that just 4-5 years of disruption to Netflix's performance could cause catastrophic damage to the company as it cannot afford to keep accruing debt the way it has been yet any hit on new subscriptions will cause large holes in its earnings and share value. Meanwhile that debt will need to be paid and Netflix may find itself outmarketed very quickly.

The term outmarketed seems to give it more credit than it deserves. With even a tiny number of players, I’m not convinced there is a market to be had that doesn’t involve spending more money than they’ll make. Even Disney which seems like the safest bet right now are going to be burning up cash at a rate that subscription charges seem very unlikely to match because the problem in all of this, as Netflix are finding out, is that you have to keep doing it to retain people. And the more competition there is, the more content you need to compete.

Since day one, the challenge for Netflix was that all of its early content, the very things that got people to subscribe in the first place, was all funded by the very model its existence would disrupt and ultimately damage and destroy if successful. It’s early advantage came from not needing to produce the content itself. But now it has to. The same now applies to just about every player. Some have access to a lot of legacy content but with the split in the market that isn’t enough.

Presumably the current wave is, ironically, less about making loads of streaming services that work and more about disrupting the disrupter. Netflix being left alone means leaving an avenue where a third party has full control of the output. If they kabosh Netflix, when the dust settles, it might not be a huge market but it'll be one back in the control a select few giants just how they like it. The linked article says Netflix's net income from the quarter was $271m which is chump change to the likes of Disney

Yep, that makes some sense. If Netflix are cannibalising their content, may as well do it themselves rather than risk leaving it to one player. But it will be self-defeating in the long run. I don’t think TV is going to die or anything but I think it’s going to have to change to remain viable and I think what that will look like is high-priced bundles and ad revenue across all content. So basically the same as cable TV.

Edit: the other thing I predict is extra charges for event TV on top of your bundle charges. Want season 8 of Stranger Things? Extra charge. Want to see the new Star Trek show? Extra charge. The Everybody Loves Raymond reboot will be free.

Interesting posts Dogg and, yeah, I think you’re spot on regarding the unsustainability of the current model and a move towards ‘premium’ shows which cost extra money. It’s how Amazon Video has always worked when it comes to movies, and it’s what we’re also going to see on Stadia for gaming. A selection of ‘free’ bundled stuff, everything else with a price tag.

As for why Amazon have a TV offering, Amazon’s entire aim seems to be to sell everyone in the world everything they ever need. Offering movies and TV is just part of making Prime stickier and making themselves the first port of call for almost any purchase or service.

Apple’s move to services seems to be entirely Wall Street driven, on the other hand. Apart from selling music, they have never been good at them. It’s just that they’ve now sold literally everyone in the world who would ever buy an iPhone an iPhone, and now need to find some new thing they can sell. I predict their offering will be the most underwhelming, despite their vast cash.
