    [NSW, PS4] Disgaea Refine

Announced for release on the 26th of July for PS4 and Switch in Japan.
This is the remake of the original Disagea that came out in 2003 on the PS2 and aside from the release date and a few screens on Famitsu nothing else in known.
Unfortunately from the printed screens it's not possible to tell if sprites will be properly redrawn or simply upscaled, nor if there are additions, refinements, rebalancing in addition to, probably, 720 and 1080 resolution. Well, there isn't any confirmation on the resolution either...

Port from the (fairly) recent PC version. Maybe.

I've seen some screen shots banded about that look good - but they look like they're from Disgaea 5 to me, which featured Laharl, Flonne and Etna as unlockable characters from DLC.

I would probably get this. I've tried to get into the series before, but when I got an American version of the first one on DS, it was impossible to save mid-battle. I actually had it on 3DS, which had a pretty bad standby time compared to the original DS, so after the third time I lost progress because I'd had it on standby and it had discharged, I ended up selling it on, despite quite enjoying it.

The Switch's battery life may be shorter than some handhelds but I find its standby to be very good.

I'm probably very wrong, but mid-battle saves have never been a thing in Disgaea. Honestly can't remember how Disgaea 5 on the Switch manages that.
I've started playing Disgaea with the PS2 version, and I think that the characters in there are still the most likeable of the whole series.

Disgaea 5 is available on Switch and although the story is not as engaging as the first game, it is a far more refined gameplay wise compared to Disgaea 1. Playing the original now feels quite clunky compared to the most recent games.

And no, you've never been able to save mid-battle, only in the base area.

That's for sure, sequels made all sorts of progress making Healers easier to level or units actually useful (hello Mage Knights from D1), but some other mechanics (Geopanels and related stuff) got a bit out of hand IMO. I know that Disgaea has always been about number crunching but I think later entries have gone a bit too far.
I also think Nippon Ichi never quite captured the charm of Laharl & co in the following strategy games, with the exception of Phantom Brave perhaps.

I probably didn't explain myself too well.

You're both correct; the DS version of Disgaea had no mid-battle save function. However, on the DS, you could close the machine to put it in standby, and the DSLite had a very long standby time, meaning this was a viable way to suspend the game.

However, I was playing it on the 3DS, which had a much worse standby time than the DS, meaning that I kept losing progress because I would have it in standby for too long.

The Switch has a standby mode where you can just hit the power and put it to sleep, and it's pretty good, because it doesn't have StreetPass or anything like that which sapped the 3DS's standby time. Then, of course, the Switch is also a home system, which means I wouldn't always be playing it while out-and-about.

First screenshots are out. Sprites have been upscaled with no filtering while unit portraits have been blurred out trying to hide jaggies from the resolution bump. This'll be a pretty lazy port.

It's an improvement on the PC version - it looks like they are using something similar to the Disgaea 5 engine; the characters look very similar in style.

Email through from NIS today, the official title for this release is "Disgaea 1 Complete Rosen Queen's Finest Edition" - that's £89.99. The none special edition is called Disgaea 1 Complete and is £49.99.

I downloaded the game on PSN soon after midnight at £44.99. 1.5Gb, so quite small.

I thought the random naming of characters was removed as there was no option for it in creating a new character, but on clicking Done with no name entered the game came up with one. Quitting the set up and going into the Assembly again will provide a different option.

I have only spent around an hour on the game so far (it was late). I have only been doing the Tutorial Map to gain some levels and new characters before tackling the main story. I’ll have to dust off my Doublejump Strategy Guide to check on new class unlocks!

This is Disgaea 1 with “enhancements” from previous games. The Specialist system appears to be changed to that from a later game. I didn’t think the original game was broken so this “enhancement” has resulted in my losing interest in the game!

How so? The specialist system in Disgaea 1 was always a little bit odd as things like Exp gains had limits and others like attack and defence didn't.

In the original you could have four stacks of Statisticians to boost Exp gain (meaning Lv 1 to Lv 9999 could be done in minutes). In the remake you can have one stack only (that will affect you Exp gain) with I believe a 900 maximum. From my half stack or so I don’t level up very quickly.

Statisticians cap out at 300 giving a 300% experience gain - I didn't think it was possible to stack them in Hour of Darkness, that was only available in the sequels. Fairly sure that's how the PC version of the game is which is pretty much a port from the PSP version of the game. It's been a while since I've played the PS2 version of the game mind.
