Yes it’s purely decorative plastic. Considering the retail cost of a Japanese mini is approx £51 it’s a bit of a swiz to charge more than the console for the tower kit.

Japanese Mega Drive Mini Collector's Edition Comes With 22 Tiny Cartridges
"The Mega Drive Mini is shaping up to be an excellent tribute to Sega's classic 16-bit console, and it's taken many years of sub-standard efforts (and, arguably, the huge success of Nintendo's HDMI-friendly Mini Classic consoles) to get to this point. With M2 taking charge of emulation on this one, Mega Drive / Genesis fans look to be in for a treat when it releases this September.
After revealing the final ten games bundled on the system (plus a couple of surprises), we were then treated to the wonderful sight of the infamous 'Tower of Power' in miniature form. Created by stacking a Mega Drive on a Mega CD and then adding a 32X, a lock-on Sonic & Knuckles-style cartridge and finally a regular cart, it's gone down as a hilarious testament to the 'more is more' mantra of Sega during the 'console wars'. The mini variants shown are purely cosmetic of course, but we want them all the same.
It seems that the Collector's Edition of the console, available now for pre-order on the Japanese Sega store, will also come with a set of 22 framed mini carts to complete the collection. That's a whole lot of 'useless' black plastic and, in many ways, it couldn't be more fitting."

As cool as those are they are horrendously expensive just looked at the prices on the sega store.
For a regular md mini DX pack it's 19418 yen, so minus the md you are paying 11880 yen for those carts. Err no thanks At least the tower was a reasonably sane price.Last edited by importaku; 25-06-2019, 12:34.

The system is great but the extras are kind of nuts given they don’t do anything. That said, they all look lovely so if I was a wealthy man, I would probably buy all of them and then look at them for a while and then put them in a box and then maybe look at them again in ten years time. Money well spent.

Wonder if they are even the same size as the cart in the tower set so you can at least put them in the console for decoration. While it's nice to see the md be celebrated with some fun extra merch i think £87 is taking the piss a little. For that cost you can be buying a 2nd mini, im sure the marketplace sellers on amazon & the sellers on ebay are creaming at the markup they can slam on these thanks to them been exclusive to the sega store.
