Didn't think much of episode 3 either. Very poor narrative this time around. Perhaps the time travel of the first game made things more interesting, but even the characters in 2 just aren't likeable - I really don't like Daniel at all, it's very poorly written to the point I'd be happy if he was killed off. Pity the puma didn't eat him.

Sitting awkwardly in the not retro but too old to be worth a First Play thread I figured I'd put this here:

Having finished the game I have to say I did enjoy it but I can see why it was less well recieved. I can appreciate the attempt to do something different rather than just a direct sequel to the original however there are just fundamental issues with the set up of this one that it never overcomes. The first issue is that there's no intrigue to it. In LiS you went on a journey with Max discovering the nature of her powers, how it would affect the world around her and finding out exactly what was happening to some of the other students. Here you kind of potter about until the end of Episode 1 where the nature of the power is made clear, after that it's just a simple set up of them trying to get to Mexico. There's no mystery and you're simply tasked with following the story through the locations.

The second issue is that your brother is the one with the power, not you. It colours your decision making and means the most interesting character is one you're simply escorting. There was room to more deeply explore the idea of consequence, decision making and moral choices but whilst that does exist in the game you're guessing what Daniel's reaction will be based on glimpses.

Daniel - Man, he is such an irritating little ****. Too many of the scenarios are due to him acting like a prat and ruining a good thing. I ended up with the closest thing to a good ending and most of the journey still had the vibe that letting him live might be a mistake.

The third is that Dontnod used the road trip set up to try and portray a constantly moving story but in doing so it means that the characters you meet are lucky to appear in a single episode if even that. You never really bond with any of them, they're fleeting presences before you're on to the next location and drama. So as to avoid it being a hatchet job of life or death scrapes they put in a lot of down time too, lovely looking vista locations etc which might be fitting but it's far from compelling either. It means that all together you're not required to think much about what's happening and it's a very sedate experience.

This is kind of why I came in with a similar line of though on Before the Storm. That was buoyed by the connection to the characters I had by the point I played it but it felt hampered to me by containing no real momentum due to being a prequel and knowing exactly where it was going. LiS2 is worse in a way because it has the same issues but more out of being predictable. The second Episode 1 featured them saying they would go to Mexico I knew we were getting a border with police finale and lo and behold.

So, whilst it is as nicely built as these games usually are Life is Strange 2 just seemed to have taken the most sedate and somewhat dullest approach to the concept.

True Colors is on game pass, should have played that instead, it's far better.

I felt that if I didn't do LiS2 now I might never, but I'll definitely be getting around to TC at some point

I never finished Life Is Strange 2... twice. I struggle to connect with the two main characters and, as you say, because of the story of the game, they're the only characters you really get to spend any time with. There just isn't anything else going on. I was no fan of Max or Chloe when I started the first game but there was so much else to connect with and hold interest that I eventually grew to like Chloe and Max too. It seems to be a big ask to just go with these two characters with little else going on.

Yep, with LiS I was fine with Max but not sold on Chloe till you get about halfway through and get into her history and what's been going on in her life so it painted a picture of why she was that way and why Max had the relationship with her that she did. In LiS2 there's none of that, both brothers are fairly blank slates and there's little sense that Daniel in particular ever really develops as it goes along either.
