Yeah, this generation has very weak CPUs and very average(for 2013-2014) GPUs. The next gen consoles have good CPUs & GPUs, plus lots more RAM and cutting edge SSDs.

It's always the case that console devs manage to get much more out of the hardware than a PC gamer would think possible. So the next gen hardware combined with lots of optimisation and clever graphic techniques, will deliver games that resemble what top-end PCs will be delivering.

I'm sure that all the graphic assets, such as trees, grass, buildings, character models etc... will be far more advanced than what we have now. Games like GTA6 & Forza Horizon 5 will look truly incredible in 4K. I'm really excited about the next gen, even though I'm still very much a retro gamer. When I bought an Xbox One X and saw how great current gen graphics can look, it made me realise that the next gen is going to take graphics to a really incredible level. The best devs are going to do wonders with the PS5 & Series X.

Another side to having better powered consoles is that it will benefit PC gamers. There has always been a synergy between Console and PC. Game developers are much more likely to develop games for consoles because they sell more, but it obviously means that the power of PCs aren't exactly being pushed to its limit as much as a game developed solely for a high end gaming PC would do. It means that a ported game to PC might have a higher refresh rate and some additional improvements, but things like partial effects could be limited or absent because it just wasn't possible on a PS4/XBO. Now with the consoles being more powerful, PC gamers will benefit too.

This time around if developers are using the ray tracing capabilities with no fallback, as the Metro devs are talking about, there will be a lot of PC gamers missing out.

There are other factors due to the differences in design but in principle what does this mean for XSX/PS5 Ray-Tracing considering the effect is so throttling of performance on RTX20XX series cards?

I would suspect that the games with Ray Tracing will be 30fps. Either that, or you'll have the option to turn off ray tracing for higher performance.

Performance on RTX cards has improved vastly since launch. Even a 2060 is quite a viable card for games with ray tracing now. Albeit it might start to struggle with 6GB of GDDR in future. The consoles are built with the ray tracing capabilites in mind and will have low level APIs which will help not to forget the amount of optimisation that can be applied with a fixed specification device.

With the 2020 launches of the next generations consoles increasingly looking questionable Microsoft has oddly chosen now to blowout its full Xbox Series X reveal.

Just seen this. That is one seriously dense console packed with components 4.45kg . Also the mystery slot on the back is indeed for expandable NMVe storage.

Looks like Sony weren't the only ones with proprietary NVMe drives. Might be understandable but dissapointing in the sense these things won't be cheap and won't work universally across devices like other tech does.

Xbox Series X Will Require Proprietary Cards to Expand Hard Drive Space (USB HDDs still supported for backups and playing BC games) - Resetera from PC Gamer

The Xbox Series X still has support for external USB 3.2 hard drives, but that's related to Microsoft's promise that all Xbox One accessories will work on the new console. Series X owners can use external USB hard drives to store and run Xbox One and Xbox Backward Compatibility titles. You will be able to store Xbox Series X games on the drives, but you won't be able to run them without transferring the game to the internal NVMe hard drive or the custom slot drives. The 1TB expansion cards will apparently be swappable between different Xbox Series X systems, so you'll be able to copy your games over to the cards and take them to a friend's console.
Interesting tear down and some analysis from Digital Foundry.

EDIT - another video which is short but includes some demos of the multi game restore feature etc.

On GAF they seem to be tracking down the rumours from last year as they think one leaker nailed this and so want to double check the PS5 leak they did in case it's accurate too. MS seem intent on sticking to 2020 as well which is interesting given things. There's a lot that goes with the specs but being realistic about where the system sits it looks like 4K 30fps is definitely going to be the norm outside of MS exclusives that tend to hold back in some ways to hit 60fps which shouldn't surprise anyone really. Overall much better for its time tech wise than the XBO/PS4 were though.

Nice to see the image of it on top of the oneX but it highlights how big it is!

I've got to wonder where the hell Sony is in all this?! MS have shown their hand. It's starting to look reckless.

Not really, maybe they've had to revise timelines a bit. There's a Sony product annoucement coming in April which certain people are suggesting is PS5.

The more interesting question is whether one or both are still on for 2020.

Microsoft have laid everything out on the table now bar price and actual release date.

Sony can now take that all in and come up with some razamatazz presentation to look more impressive.
