Hackers leak full EA data after failed extortion attempt

" - Hackers leak 751GB of compressed EA data containing FIFA 21 source code.
        - Data dump comes from a hack that took place in June 2021.
        - EA says no player data was included in the stolen data, confirmed by the data leaked this week.

The hackers who breached Electronic Arts last month have released the entire cache of stolen data after failing to extort the company and later sell the stolen files to a third-party buyer.

The data, dumped on an underground cybercrime forum on Monday, July 26, is now being widely distributed on torrent sites.

According to a copy of the dump obtained by The Record, the leaked files contain the source code of the FIFA 21 soccer game, including tools to support the company’s server-side services.

How the EA breach took place
The existence of this leak was initially disclosed on June 10, when the hackers posted a thread on an underground hacking forum claiming to be in possession of EA data, which they were willing to sell for $28 million.

In an interview with Motherboard, the hackers claimed to have gained access to the data after buying authentication cookies for an EA internal Slack channel from a dark web marketplace called Genesis.

The hackers said they used the authentication cookies to mimick an already-logged-in EA employee’s account and access EA’s Slack channel and then trick an EA IT support staffer into granting them access to the company’s internal network.

From there, the hackers then proceeded to download more than 780GB of source code from the company’s internal code repositories."

$130m Loss Expected for Epic Games Store Exclusives in First Wave

"The first wave of Epic Games Store exclusive is proving to be pretty pricey. According to documents sourced from the Epic vs. Apple legal battle, it looks like the first 23 games it gave away are going to lose Epic Games a cool $130 million.

The Epic Games Store has been around for a couple of years now and it entered the market with a bold strategy — it pays developers significant sums of money to ensure that these upcoming titles are only available on the Epic Games Store. A game is typically exclusive to the storefront for around a year, although shorter periods have been observed such as with Borderlands 3.

In the years since then, Epic Games has snapped up a number of hot properties as timed exclusives such as Hitman 3 and Ooblets. However, these exclusivity deals come at a cost. We now have a somewhat better idea of what Epic Games is paying for these exclusivity deals — and how much money it's losing as a result."

                TL: DR
McDonald's designed a controller, it was accidentally leaked. Sony knew nothing about it. It was never supposed to leave the planning phase. People got unnecessarily excited.

Forza’s End of Life Process Highlights So Many Issues

"If there’s one thing the Forza series has become known for over the years, aside from being a pretty stellar racing game series, it’s the “End of Life” process that all the older games in the series have gone through. Recently, it was announced that Forza Motorsport 7 would be next to go through the process, and while it’s certainly not the first, boy I hope it’s the last."

The end of life thing is something I see as more of an issue with the Horizon series due to the distinctive elements of that series. I assume MS doesn't just pay for the license fees because presumably very, very few people play Forza Motorsports 1-7 when 8 is out eg. there's no point as they're effectively refinements of the same experience.

At this point though I'm kind of suprised licensing agreements are still so time limited for pre-existing games.

A couple of times I've thought about buying one of the newer Horizons, only to find all the DLC is gone.
The Hot Wheels one looked ace, but it's all gone now, so can't be arsed.
                        I don't think I'm Microsoft's target audience, so they don't care.
