Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

It's out! First impressions are it has a brisk pace, you're out on the road in less than an hour which I appreciate. The voice acting's been well done so far, everyone has a West Country accent in the starting town which works well. The localisation's very charming and the game itself is gorgeous of course. I love the enemy animations, it gives them so much character, especially the Cruelcumbers. SE have given them a lot of love and care and it really shows.

When you level up you gain points that can be used to unlock abilities in one of four skill sets - Swords, Greatswords, Swordmastery and Luminary. Swords has a flame sword attack you can unlock straight away but I think if I save my points I'll be able to unlock a party wide lightning attack via the Luminary skillset quicker so I'm going for that. I don't know for sure but I think other characters might have different skill sets? I don't have any yet so I'm just guessing.

I'm playing it on the following PC -

    i7 4790k @ 4GHz
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    SSD
    AMD R9 290
    Windows 10

I guess my 290 is finally showing it's age because even overclocked the game will sometimes drop to 50fps outside of town @ 1080p maxed out. There is a 30fps option in the menus but I haven't gone for it. It seems to be a very competent port from SE which I think is par for the course with their bigger titles.

So far so good then, I can tell I'm going to enjoy this

Only had a quick go yesterday, but yeah PC version is pretty cool. Started with 18 seeds of skill in my inventory, which I'm assuming is hella cheating. Atleast the other starting bonus items I got didn't seem too overpowered, just a little better than the equip you start with. I started the game with 2 Draconian Quest modifiers (difficulty enhancements) and quickly turned off the one for "less EXP from low level enemies" as it just made me not want to fight stuff most of the time. Kept the "all enemies are super strong" mod on though, doesn't seem so bad to keep active as I heard the game is super easy from others. I love how the enemies aren't just wandering around waiting for you now. Some of the bird type enemies were perched on stone walls in the first area and they flew off if you got close, but you can do the attack thing to engage in battle with them still. Speaking of battle, I don't understand the new battle type camera, so I went back to classic. New camera basically lets you control the characters movement inbetween turns, but there doesn't seem to be any reason to do this? Also, classic mode removes the waiting times between turns, so that's the way I'm gonna play it.

I switched back as well, battles are already pretty fast but classic mode gives it that nice boost.

Playing on PS4pro and massively enjoying this game so far, everything about it just has so much love and polish put in to it. Gotten up to the 1st member of the party joining officially, had make sure to turn of auto tactics so i could control him. Also makes me laugh, remembering back to playing snes and megadrive rpgs, ignoring the main quest line when i enter a new area to loot the pots and cupboards, spent a good 20 minutes running around the kings castle smashing every pot and opening every wardrobe while everyone was ignoring me (aisde from trying to open a chest some fat little trader was guarding and some old women in the town telling me i was cheeky for looting the wardrobe in front of her )

Only thing that has thrown me so far is the silent protagonist, coming off the back of DQ Heroes 2 i thought they may have finally have done it, specially with the full voice cast.

Yeah nothing is sacred here lol, you really need to search those bookshelves for recipes though!

I'm about 10 hours in now, was quite touched when

you have the flashback and see your old grandad again. I'm assuming everyone in Cobblestone has been taken prisoner since there aren't any bodies

Crafting has been easy enough so far netting me a bunch of +3 gear. I'm not sure if making every bar gold gets you something even better though, I haven't managed it yet and had my gear rated as perfect even when I only managed it with some of them.

about 12hrs in and made it the to the "port" themed town, so far my only complaint is the music, zero variety its been the same overworld and town music looping for 12hrs now... this is one place where final fantasy is better.

Really enjoying this game still. I'm moving through it pretty slowly though due to the Drachonian quest hard mode thing, one of the bosses was a real wakeup call and I had to sort out all my gear, upgrade said gear, steal items from enemies to craft unique stuff etc, just to get past it. Love the challenge though, and I just got the boat so the game opened up a little too. Next stop, Casino!

I wish I'd selected some of the Drachonian options, the game really is far too easy. Still fun, just too easy. I'm currently enjoying exploring the world map in my ship, I can't remember the last time an RPG let you do that.

I've seen a few people complain about the music Tobal although personally I haven't got tired of it.

What's everyone's party set up? Right now I have MC, Erik, Veronica and Selena. I wasn't a fan of Sylvando at first but I admit he is growing on me. Veronica's VA nails her character, she's easily the standout so far.

40 hours in and I have half of the orbs. I keep getting side tracked with the crafting and making sure everything is +3.

This just got officially announced at TGS as Dragon Quest XI S. No release date or confirmation of a western release yet but it's coming.

                      Good stuff.

I have a mate who bought this on PC and he played for about 6-8 hours and found it was a long boring slog and has yet to get going. He kind of dampened my excitement. I will still get it at some point. Maybe it will have dropped in price somewhat on PS4 when Switch version is released.

Took me 75 hours to collect all the Dragon Balls. I mean Orbs. Not bored yet, and there looks to be loads left to do.

It's a meaty RPG for sure, I'm 55 hours in, feels like I'm halfway through? Maybe two thirds.

The bad guy won and I'm recollecting orbs/party members

. Thought I had all my party members but just got a new addition who might be taking a permanent spot on the team. Dude has some devastating attacks.

I can see how people would find it boring, if your not into the art style and chirpy innocent look the game has, it is "just" a classic 16bit RPG, build the party, spec the "jobs" how you want them, get your ride so you can travel the world, collect the mcguffins (which where i'm up to, about 20hrs in). Gameplay hasn't changed since the 1st member joined really and there is no challenge on standard rules (aside some a few boss fights i had to pay attention to).

No boy band on tour and fancy set pieces with QTE buttons slapped on it.

Erik's Wild Side PEP + Divide + Cobra Strike/Victimiser is OP af. It decimates everything. Add a defensive debuff to the enemy and their done, just done.

I beat the game last night and what a ride that was! Not a single moment felt boring or drawn out, the pace was fantastic. The story has this whimsical flair but doesn't pull any punches when it comes wrapping up story arcs and side quests. It's probably my GOTY and my favourite game since DOOM 2016. One of those rare standout titles you remember for years to come.

I'm moving onto the post game content now. I may go for 100% on the achievements just because I enjoy the game so much. One of them is level every character to lvl 99 but I really enjoy the combat and everyone's already at 60ish so I dunno, I'll see where I'm at once I've completed everything else.
