Critics Club II: 24 - Kurt Russell

"Hey, I'm a reasonable guy. But I've just voted for some very unreasonable things"

    Kurt Russell

Vote for the movie you feel is their best whilst also discussing their other work, your reasons for voting and thoughts on what is their weakest.

Some will have very long lists so some trimming will be required to focus on the key entries but broadly the main selection will be available each time.

So many greats here. And even where they aren't great, he does great things in them. Really hard to choose because my mind instantly goes to The Thing because it's one of my favourite movies but he defines so many other movies too. Escape from NY, Big Trouble he's just amazing in. He's superb in Tango and Cash, Backdraft and Tombstone. Even that one with Goldie Hawn he's great in. So lots to choose from and it's tough to pick just one.

Agree with what Dogg said, so many choices, but I instantly thought Escape From New York, so that's how I've voted.

The Thing is also an amazing film, so rich is depth and more than EFNY, but the latter is just such a roller coaster of a movie that doesn't stop once it gets started.

Also, as great as he is in The Thing (and he is), he absolutely fills the screen as Snake in Escape From New York. He makes that movie. So I can't disagree with you, QC.

Personally, I believe another actor could have portrayed R.J. MacReady.
That's not a criticism of Russell. The point of the character (and most Carpenter film leads) is that he's an everyman thrown into a strange situation.

I couldn't imagine anyone else playing Snake Plissken.
          He's a force of nature.

I agree with most of the above comments but I just have to go with The Thing. A close run thing with his other JC films for sure, but MacReady is all kinds of awesome.

Another film I love here is Breakdown. They do make 'em like they used to, apparently. Or they did in the 90s

I voted for Miracle, for a similar reason to some of the other threads. That movie's pretty straightforward; it's a sports movie about ice hockey. No big sci-fi trappings or explosions, and it works largely because Russell does a wonderful job. Great film.

Sadly not so easy to get in the UK.

Though if I was to vote for my favourite overall movie on that list, it'd be The Thing.

Kurt loses some cool points for smashing a genuine, 150 year old Martin guitar in The Hateful Eight. Apparently JJL's reaction in that scene is real, because she knew that was not a stunt guitar ... Kurt just got carried away with the scene apparently. And Martin vowed never to loan a museum piece to any film ever again.

                  Pffft. What's their problem?

It's not like it was brand new.

I always liked him as Stuntman Mike in Death Proof.

Also wouldn't being smashed by Kurt Russell increase its value?

Accolades for the usual suspects are completely on the money. How can one choose between Escape from New York, The Thing, Backdraft, Tombstone, Tango and Cash or Big Trouble in Little China. I have a softspot for 3000 Miles to Graceland - come at me bros!
