If the WiiU eShop is still up you can buy Spirit Tracks and softmod a WiiU into region free in a very few easy steps. Not as straightforward as a Wii, but still pretty easy.

They're making a point of it being an EU version on the site, so I'd not fancy your chances on region-free. Though it seems there's also a Switch version coming with an additional game, so perhaps I dun goofed with my choice for other reasons.
