    The Podcast Thread!

I don't really listen to podcasts as I'd rather listen to an audiobook, but I'm willing to check something out of you want to enthuse others to listen to one you love.

    Bring me your podcast recommendations!

We have some other (older) threads on gaming podcasts, which you can post those here too, but any podcast you find enjoyable and would recommend to others is welcome.

Please do links, a little synopsis and why you like it, please.

The only ones I listened to are:
Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast
"RHLSTP with Richard Herring - which launched under the title Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast - is an award-winning series in which Richard Herring chats with some of the biggest names in comedy. Stephen Fry, Steve Coogan, Russell Brand, Sarah Millican, David Mitchell are amongst the many comedy stars to have been interviewed across the 200+ episodes."

The one with Greg Davies had me crying with laughter!
I've liked Herring since Lionel Nimrod's Inexplicable World on Radio 4, so it's great to hear him chatting with some of the big names in recent comedy.

    The Film Reroll Podcast
"We play through your favorite movies as RPGs and totally ruin them."

A clever idea that can end up being pretty funny. I've only done the John Wick one so far, though.

    Life in the Stocks
"Hosted by Matt Stocks (Ex-Kerrang! Radio, Metal Hammer, Classic Rock & Scuzz TV) Life In The Stocks features unedited, in-depth conversations with musicians, actors, comedians, writers, directors, producers, photographers & industry figures."

Matt gets some good guests in and usually has a pretty interesting chat with them.

The only podcast I listen to on a regular basis probably won't be for many of you. It's called Beyond Synth and it bills itself as the best synthwave chat show there is. Hosted by a guy called Andy Last, he interviews people in synthwave and plays a lot of cool music. But the chat usually veers far, far away from music and into 80s and 90s videogames, movies and so on. Sometimes pretty funny, has quite a bit of swearing if you're sensitive to that sort of thing (I am but have kind of got used to it with Andy) but mostly it has some very good music and interesting people.

      LIST WARS!

Crime based, always start from the beginning with any of these, some are even more interesting going in knowing nothing about them.

      S-Town
      Serial
      Up and Vanished
      Accused
Hussle - This one is fascinating, prison stories told by prisoners in USA.

      Comedy -

The Adam Buxton Podcast - SO many good good episodes, Bill Hader, David Mitchell, Joe Cornish, Edgar Wright....I really could go on forever.

The Ron Burgundy Podcast - It’s anchorman the podcast, start from beginning.

The Fear - This one has a comedy guest on each episode where they talk about 3 fears: scary moment from film or tv, childhood fear and fear or phobia they live with now. I always recommend the Alice Lowe episode to start with it you want a flavour of what it is.

      Gaming -

I’ve settled on these now, after taking in quite a lot of the bigger gaming personalities.

      Gamesindustry.biz
      Eurogamer
      Rock Paper Shotgun
      Waypoint

I thought we had an existing podcast thread but maybe it was lost in the great purge.

I find the world of podcasts overwhelming in a way due to the sheer amount of content.

        Recommended ...

S-Town is one of my absolute favourites. An amazing piece of work. Go in knowing nothing. 7 episodes.
The Butterfly Effect by Jon Ronson is brilliant too, exploring the effect of free porn throughout the industry and beyond. 7 episodes.
The Last Days of August, also by Jon Ronson, also looking into the porn industry and the effect of social media bullying.

        also ...

        Comedy
        - Dear Joan and Jericha - brutal agony aunts played by the brilliant Julia Davis and Vicki Pepperdine
        - Clinton Baptite's Paranormal Podcast
        - Bunk Bed
        - The Adam Buxton Podcast

        Interviews
        - The Rich Roll Podcast - I cherry pick the guests on this one, as I do with ...
        - The Joe Rogan Experience

        Film / books
        - How To Survive - The Film Survival Podcast
        - The Arrow Video Podcast
        - Castle of Horror
        - Stephen King Cast

        Drama
        - Wolverine: The Long Night
        - The Narrow Caves by S Craig Zahler
(Brawl In Cellblock 99, Dragged Across Concrete)

Looking forward to trying a few I've seen above ... might give Hustle a go.

          Podcasts

What are y'all listening to? I mean, I know you're all subbed to Adam Buxton but what else? I've got like 300 hours of podcasts queued up already but I'm always looking for more because I'm stupid.

Tell me this episode of Hollywood Handbook isn't the best thing ever. It's about making a video game based on a movie so it is FORUM APPROPRIATE.

I won't lie, I thought Podcasts had largely gone the way of the Pager/Geocities/MySpace etc

                  I've merged the threads.

I listened to a bunch of podcasts, but Buxton's was easily the best.
It's the combination of guests and presentation that elevates it above the others.

The problem I found was that like reading a magazine about films, rather than watching films, it felt a little hollow.
I ended up back on the audiobooks pretty quick, but I'll definitely check out a couple more.

Don't listen to podcasts about films then, innit! There's a lot more to podcasts than just listening to x interviewing y and I can see why you'd get bored if that's all you were listening to. Try that episode of Hollywood Handbook (above) for something similar but different.

If you like audiobooks, try something with a plot like the first season of Limetown. Or maybe something with a "plot" like Hello From the Magic Tavern. The premise there is that a guy fell through a portal into a magical land and happened to have his podcast equipment with him and so broadcasts back to earth via a weak WiFi signal he can still reach from the other side of the portal. It's all improvised, and anything anyone says immediately becomes canon.

Something more factual maybe? Swindled is a podcast about white-collar crime. Or All Killa No Filla where a couple of female comedians discuss serial killers but also are very funny.

                      I've not quit yet!

Limetown is one of the ones I've got lined up to listen to, but I'll check out some of your other suggestions too, thanks.

I find the best podcasts are generally those done by people in the media as otherwise they sound too amateur for me.
I like: Football Weekly, Cane & Rinse (excellent), Tifo, More Or Less, LSE Open lectures, Monocle Urbanist and probably more.

                          Can't go wrong with RHLSTP.

I've been listening to it for a few years and it's always great. The Brian Blessed one is a masterpiece.

Recently got into the Joe Rogan Experience.

I've listened to loads since my first one a little while ago - Eddie Izzard, Macaulay Culkin, Leah Remini, Russell Brand, Elon Musk(who was booooring until he got some weed down him), Neil DeGrassi Tyson...

I started with Milo Yiannopoulos, because I wanted to hear what right-wing nutjobs actually sound like. Joe's great because he gives the guest time to say their piece, but he also asks good questions. The Milo one reminded me of Jackie Chan's line in the first Rush Hour:

Lee: I like to let people talk who like to talk. It makes it easier to find out how full of **** they are.

                            Studio C-41
                            Infinite Monkey Cage
                            Internet of Things

I still listen to quite a few and have create them in the past when Console Monster was more active that it is now. The trouble is getting people to dedicate time every week. Actually, it was a struggle to get people to commit once a month, despite that, I quite fancy starting another one up if anyone is interested.

sad day for me as Gameburst the 30 minute weekly gaming news podcast have called it quits on the weekly schedule. are there any UK-centric alternatives that aren't hours long each week?
