If you could only own one console

    Which one would it be?

PlayStation 2 for me. Not even taking PS1 BC into account. The variety is insane. The only reason I don't own one anymore is because I can get my JRPG fix elsewhere and that a lot of my PS2 favs have gotten remasters on PS3/4.

I mean, just look at this (subjective list, not into fighters and racing games). I'll make a note for where you can buy these on newer home consoles and also where a game was only ported to a newer handheld.

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
    Ape Escape 2 (PS4)
    Ape Escape 3
    Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia
    Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana
    Dark Cloud (PS4)
    Dark Cloud 2/Dark Chronicle (PS4)
Devil May Cry (PS4, Xbox One, NSW)
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening SE (PS4, Xbox One)
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (3DS)
    Drakengard
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly (PS3)
    Final Fantasy X (PS4, NSW)
Final Fantasy XII (PS4, Xbox One, NSW)
    God Hand (PS3)
    God of War (PS3)
    God of War II (PS3)
    Gradius V (PS3)
    Grandia II (NSW)
    .hack//G.U. Vol. 1//Rebirth (PS4)
    .hack//G.U. Vol. 2//Reminisce (PS4)
    .hack//G.U. Vol. 3//Redemption (PS4)
    Ico (PS3)
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (PS4)
    Jak 2 (PS4)
    Jak 3 (PS4)
    Katamari Damacy (NSW)
    Kingdom Hearts (PS4)
    Kingdom Hearts II (PS4)
    Killer7
    Killzone (PS3)
    Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS3, Xbox One)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS3, Xbox One)
    Odin Sphere (PS4, Vita)
    Okami (PS4, Xbox One, NSW)
Onimusha: Warlords (PS4, Xbox One, NSW)
    Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
    Radiata Stories
    Ratchet & Clank (PS3)
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (PS3)
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal (PS3)
    Ratchet & Clank: Deadlocked/Gladiator (PS3)
Resident Evil 4 (PS4, Xbox One)
Resident Evil: Code Veronica X (PS4, Xbox One)
    Rez (PS4)
    Rogue Galaxy (PS4)
    Shadow Hearts: Covenant
    Shadow of the Colossus (PS4)
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (PS3)
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 (PS3)
    Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PS3)
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 (PS3)
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (PS3)
    Silent Hill 2 (PS3)
Sly Cooper & the Thievius Raccoonus (PS3)
Sly 2: Band of Thieves (PS3)
Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves (PS3)
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (PS4)
    Super Monkey Ball Deluxe
    Tales of the Abyss (3DS)
    Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven
    Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
    Viewtiful Joe
    Viewtiful Joe 2
Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht
Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseitz von Gut und Böse
Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra
    Ys: The Ark of Napishtim
    Zone of the Enders (PS3)
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner (PS4)

Absolute insanity. Thankfully the PS2 is the most ported system ever. Playing these in 720p/1080p with wireless controllers and wireless audio and much shorter loading times is bliss. The only bad ports from this list are Zone of the Enders and Silent Hill 2 for PS3.

You guys don't have to make lists of games etc., I just had to put the list I had in my head down somewhere!

PS3 is very much up there, all those fantastic PS2 remasters, superior sequels to PS2 games, plus its own exclusives. Also has a vast selection of PS1 games on the PS Store in addition to backwards compatibility.

Megadrive without doubt. I could play the shooters everyday and never get bored.

I think the PS2 also. It's just got such a huge variety of games.

Yup, only things it's missing for me are 480p for every game and more Resident Evil ports. That'd be a dream come true

If it's retro-only, Super Famicom. If slightly later, Xbox 360.

In the past it would have been the NES but these days it's probably the PS1. I just love that generation of games and there's so much variety on offer, it'd be a long time before I tired of it, if I ever did.

Although, I suppose I could cheat and get a PS2 for access to both system's libraries

Indeed, specially if you include JP PS1 imports. Could easily make a list as long as the one I made above

I'd be reasonably happy with just a SNES and its best games. The machine has plenty of truly great games in all genres. So from platformers, puzzlers, racers, action titles, and some decent shoot 'em ups, the SNES has all bases covered.
The fact that it's a beautiful machine with excellent joypads helps to make it my 'must-have' console.

                        Super Famicom for me.

PlayStation (PSX) wouldn't be too far behind.

PS1 or SNES, really difficult to decide as I love them both.

Probably shouldn't have made this thread as it just makes me want a PS2 even more. Must resist and hope and pray that PS5 will be BC. Still baffles me that there is absolutely no BC on the PS4 except a shoddy selection of PS2 classics.

In the meantime I'm rather enjoying the PS2 Classics release of God Hand on the PS3.

Had to have a really good think on this one, where my knee jerk reaction would be to say PC-Engine or Neo Geo, in reality I would go for the PS3.

Three Uncharted games, The Last of Us, Ridge Racer 7, Vanquish, Resistance series, Killzone etc, loved them all. And with a bit of messing about with region changes I could still get to play a bunch of my beloved Neo and PCE games as well as some of the classic PS1 stuff.
