Thread: Shenmue 3

Played a bit more. It’s so janky! The conversations are hilarious. It’s janky in ways that other games would get slaughtered for. And yet... it’s Shenmue. That Shenmue heart and soul is still there. It feels like a proper continuation. So far, even with the jankiness, it’s all I could have hoped for. The opening village is quite lovely.

I started in English but might switch to the Japanese. Some of the English voices aren’t exactly stellar and I played Shenmue 2 in Japanese so might give that a go.

I dropped the English voices like a bag of hot feces. I made the transition from American Ryo to Japanese Ryo back in 2001 so don’t see much point in switching back again.

So, on the second night of playing this, it's finally getting going. Yesterday I was kind of spaced out ("Holy crap, it's Shenmue 3, for real") and was just admiring everything, and being confused by the new mechanics (like how quickly Ryo gets tired out after running).

Today is started figuring out the new fight system some more, and realized that you can pretty quickly run farther distances without him getting tired (the more you train - makes sense). The story is getting going now and I have to say, it's kind of amazing how much it feels like there weren't 18 years inbetween this and the first two.

I also can’t be the only one who laughed when the first fight came with the advice, “Just press the Square/cross/triangle/circle buttons”, in light of the series’ Virtua Fighter connection.

    Shenmue 3.

    Soundtrack.

Could you ever have imagined? I don't want to be overly dramatic but the main Shenmue theme here is bringing me to tears.
THAT's what I'm wantin'. The reviews all talk about 'emotion', Happy Console Gamer's recent vid tries to play the tears down but it's clear he was crying like a drain.

    That's it.

    EMOTION.

I still cant quite believe I have it. I nearly printed and framed my amazon email saying "Your Shenmue III has been dispatched".

Has anyone managed to complete the shenmue capsule toy collection? I can't seem to ever get Ryo on the forklift, and have about 15 flipping Ine-sans.

Welcome back David Heston... do you still have spikey black hair?

I’ve not completed the capsule toy collection, but appreciate how you don’t need to go through the same animation of paying and turning the dial of the capsule machine, speeds the whole process up instantly...

I keep getting the guy in the suit or Nozomi.

Hello again lad! Alas, my hair is no longer vertical. I'm fast approaching middle age and all vibes in the hair department have long gone.

Anyone else finding playing a new Shenmue a weirdly emotional experience? I think the Consolevania review of the HD remaster hits the nail on head far better than I could: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJ5dvAUpHR0&t=397s

It's strange playing this now with a mortgage and a 3 year old, when 18 years ago playing Shenmue 2 life was pretty flipping different thats for sure.

And I still cant fecking get Ryo on the forklift out of that bastard machine.

I thought the same when I saw that video, it obviously means a great deal to him and is helping him through a rough time. That point where he reminisces about old times with his parents standing in the doorway waving to him is very sweet.
