    New PC - now built!

Need a new PC. My son has mine, so I'm using a laptop.
    The laptop is an i5 3230 2.6
I use it for video processing which takes an annoyingly long amount of time.

I would like a new PC that can whizz through video processing (the app I use supports hardware acceleration).
If possible, I would like it to be a smaller than normal PC, but still be VR ready - if that's insanity, please tell me.
It needs to have a 250GB SSD plus a 1TB SSD (or the capability for me to add that).
    It needs to be quiet.
    Decent power supply etc.
No idea how much RAM I need these days. 16GB?
    Windows 64bit Pro version.

I was thinking of choosing one off pcspecialist custom build, but got a bit lost.

Ryzen 3700X, X570 mobo, 16GB DDR4 3000 RAM. 500 Watt Bronze PSU and if you want a VR Ready PC, you're going to need a fairly decent GFX card such as (entry level at top)

    GTX 1660 Ti
    Radeon RX 5700
    Ventus RTX 2060
    RTX 2070 Super

For solid state drives, look for an M.2 NVME from Intel, WD (avoid green), Sandisk, Samsung

Any hints on what smallest case I can fit this stuff in or do I just need to go normal tower?

You want some decent airflow if you're doing a lot of rendering, so I wouldn't go too small. A mid-tower is fine with a 2-in 1 out 12cm fan arrangement - if it fits an ATX board, then a mATX will also fit (ATX mobo will give you more PCIe slots for expansion and often more SATA and RAM slots).

        Something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Car...5234596&sr=8-3

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Mar...d/#view=vzJgt6 - you can have a play about with parts - you could go down to a 3600 (6C12T) or a 2700X (previous gen 8C16T and B450 mobo) - all depends on budget, but that build you're looking at around £1K.

PC Parts picker will allow you to see if everything is compatible.

Very much budget dependent and how long you want the PC to last before replacing or upgrading but my comments are as follows:

            Ryzen 3600 or 3700 (or X variants) are excellent for games and applications. (I have a Ryzen 3900X which is overkill in hindsight);
GPU - you should really get the best you can here. High end stuff which provides great bang for buck are the RTX 2070 Super and the AMD 5700XT. I would not go for the RTX 2080 cards unless you really spunk money (I have an RTX 2080 Super ).
RAM - Get 2 sticks of 8GB DDR4 at 3600 Mhz (it is not that much more than slower RAM). 16GB is enough.
SSD/NVME - Get a 500GB OS and key software drive, a 1TB game install drive and a 1TB Photo/video editing drive and a 3TB HDD for films (basically this is what I have).
Mobo: strictly speaking, you really don't need an x570 board as it is not fully utilised with PCie4 yet. A decent B450 mobo is fine.

Case form factors, the most gorgeous one I have seen recently that is small is NZXT H1 but I have no idea who is selling it at the moment.

The new NZXT H1 small form factor case is here and PHEW is it something. Let's do a full gaming build in the super compact ITX case! Review drops Friday!• NZ...

Need to be careful with B450 with 3XXX series Ryzen as they might not be compatible out of the box without a BIOS update which for most boards you'll need a CPU for (and not all B450 will have a BIOS update that upgrades support, so that needs to be checked on the manufacturer's website).

Yeah, agree, but any decent PC builder will be able to flash the BIOS and get it working.

MSI boards have a BIOS flashback function which allows you to flash the BIOS without even a CPU, just need the motherboard's ATX connector hooked up to a PSU. Something like a B450 Tomahawk Max would be perfect though, as it's a revision of the acclaimed B450 Tomahawk but with guaranteed out of the box Zen 2 support. Had one with a 2600 for a year and a half now and it's been rock solid.

PSU wise I'd personally stick to 80+ Gold minimum but Bronze should suit you fine if you're not tinkering with your CPU or GPU.

                      I think I can manage

I won't be overclocking and stuff. Just want it to work well out of the gate.
