    Persona 5 Royal [PS4]

I'm assuming the original thread was lost in the 'great purge', though I've got history here for bad search results, so who knows. I reckon I can get away with it this time given it's a new release, though.

I didn't even make it into the second dungeon of vanilla P5, which is making me wonder if trying again in what's likely a longer incarnation is a good idea or not. Still, I started it, and already there's some changes (namely the appearance of the new character within the first hour). It's still stylish as all hell, the music's still great, I just hope that there's a bit more freedom. Progressing through the story quicker would be nice too, but I feel that's probably pushing my luck.

Here's a question to anyone who's been keeping up with what to expect, and is generally familiar with P5: what should I be making sure not to miss? For context: when through P4G, I didn't follow a guide, and then later realised I missed a whole chunk of game by not doing enough with Marie's social link.

Oh man, don't hope to get through the story too quickly. I played through all of P5 - it's a brilliant game, but it is ridiculously lengthy at 160 odd hours for a 'normal' playthrough (i.e. I didn't try and do absolutely everything). I can only image how content-packed this expanded version is.

In terms of what not to miss, without using a guide there is really no way to do an 'optimal' playthrough where you do as much as is possible. Personally I don't really enjoy following guides as I find it can make playing a game feel a bit too much like a job, but YMMV. If you don't use one, you'll need to accept that you won't be able to do everything optimally and see absolutely everything.

There is one thing it might be worth using a guide for, which won't force you to slavishly follow it throughout the game - you could take a look at what the buffs are that you get from maxing out certain social links. This should help you to prioritise who you'd like to spend the most time with.

I'd also advise a 'min max' approach to the relationships. You are better off maxing a few of them and abandoning some others entirely, rather than getting halfway with absolutely everybody.

I'm with you in avoiding complete guides - that will definitely kill a lot of the fun for something this long - but if I spy any tips or vague advice I'm hoovering it up. For instance - this article cropped up in my feed, and while some of it is arguably quite obvious, there was enough in there for me to take a couple of things away from it. I think I'm already at roughly the same point that I dropped vanilla, so I think I'm in good stead to plough on further in.

    Those are good tips!

Ugh, now I kind of want to play this again. Such a great game.

40 hours in! End of the third palace! It's happening this time!

I've had this week off and have basically been playing this with every waking hour I can find - just now back past where the game begins in the casino. Still really enjoying it, but bloody hell is it long.

Had a minor panic around September (in-game time) when I finally looked at the conditions for getting to the true ending and realising I was way behind on one of them - this is the kind of nonsense I was originally afraid of, and luckily got tipped off to look at them just in time. I'm popping them below, and even though I'm writing them as non-spoilery as possible I'm tagging them to prevent anyone seeing them that doesn't want to know.

Get the following confidants to the related levels by these dates...
    - Councillor - rank 9 by 17th November
    - Justice - rank 8 by 17th November
    - Faith - rank 5 by 22nd December
... also dialogue options become important and lock you out of things as of the 20th of November, so either look at a guide / pay more attention / create backup saves etc

Nice one Fuse. Yeah, it is a very long game. I remember getting to the casino and thinking ‘Surely I am close to the end now’ - nope! Still a ways to go

    It’s a wonderful game though.

Never played a persona game in my life but i have heard too many good things about this enhanced edition to pass it up, im after another long jrpg after pretty much rinsing dq11. Still waiting for it to arrive in the post but looking forward to seeing if it is as good as people are saying.

I finished it up the other day and did some words over here if you're interested. If you're looking for long though, you've come to the right place (winks, pulls his line of sight to the pair of keys in the bowl).

DQ11 is a mighty tough act to follow, but provided you get along with the social side of things at least you'll get the same kind of play time out of it.

Had a read of that, some nice impressions. i will be at a huge disadvantage as i have never played persona in any form but i have seen a few vids on youtube to know i'll like it both in mechanics & style although it will be tough to choose what to spend my time on as i know you cant max out all the social side of things. Is this always the case or is there some new game plus where you can keep what you did previously and go for the ones you didn't have time to do?

But yeah DQ11 set the bar stupidly high even as great as Ninokuni II was it didn't even get close to touching DQ11's greatness, i wish they would redo sentinels of the starry sky in this graphical style it would be amazing i loved how alive and detailled the world was in 11. Sadly it's going to be so long till another mainline DQ game drops and will not be on current gen consoles now. Looking forward to seeing how good persona is, people rave about this series so i'm curious to see what i'm missing.
