Deep Mind makes front page of The Times. Great news in 2020

Deepmind finds biology’s ‘holy grail’ with answer to protein problem
Huge advance for medicine in quick way to map building blocks of life

One of the greatest challenges in modern biology has been “largely solved” by British researchers who have developed a method to visualise the proteins that power the biological processes in our bodies.

The “stunning” announcement by scientists at Deepmind that they can calculate the structure of proteins using only a computer has profound implications for drug discovery and defeating disease, and was hailed by other scientists as an “enormous advance” that many had not expected to see in their lifetime.

The findings also represent one of the greatest achievements of machine learning, by an artificial intelligence company that previously produced the first computer that could beat the best humans at the board game Go.

Ewan Birney, deputy director-general of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, said that his field was “in a different zone after this”.

“I nearly fell off my chair when I saw these results,” he said. “It’s hard to know what the impact will be because it’s been such a holy grail.”

      Demis Hassabis interview

For the CEO of a half-billion-pound company, Demis Hassabis’s working day begins very moderately. There is no 5am kale smoothie with The Wall Street Journal, no intensive workout followed by breakfast board meeting. Instead, he arrives in his office beside King’s Cross in London at a sensible hour,

Philip Green's Arcadia Group has collapsed risking 13,000 jobs and sending the Top Shop, Miss Selfridge, Dorothy Perkins, Burtons and Evans stores all into Administration. JD Sports was in talks to buy out the stores but looks set to pull out of discussions heightening the risk that none will be rescued.

And Boris reaches panic levels as Tory rebels mount to vote against the new COVID tiers, a key issue because Starmar has now announced that Labour will abstain from the vote meaning Johnson can't rely on them for the vote. The vote is still expected to scrape by but the issue arises from Government's inability to cost the Tiers.

Rita Ora gets called out - no, not on her rampant career long cultural appropriation - but her having a party for 30 during lockdown at a restaurant claiming 'oh but I didn't know there was a lockdown'
What's this about? Genuinely don't know who this is; is she the current head of the Welsh Assembly?

You don't know who Rita Ora is?! She has like a decade long cut-priced Rhianna career going on and even cameo'd in (I think it was) Fast and Furious 6. It's literally a C-List celeb thinking they're above restrictions and then when it turns out to be a pretty unpopular move making an incredibly implausible defence scenario.

You've probably seen her face invading your TV over the years:

Sounds like Folding@Home is largely redundant now. An amazing result for Deepmind though.

Also isn't Demis Hassabis the guy behind Theme Park?

Ah, well. The British better develop a hell of an appetite for fish because that's all we'll have to eat from next month.

Hah! I think I'd just been reading something about Welsh politics and thought it was related.

Makes me laugh that arcadia is going bust. They only have a billionaire running the show. Not like he can't dip his hand in his own pocket to help prop it up.
Philip Green is everything wrong with commercialism

                                Absolutely
I think I read the yacht he currently has moored in Monaco is worth something like £100 million
Just sell the damn thing & save thousands of jobs
