The Royal Tenenbaums. It's a gorgeous movie full of melancholy and magic.

Never got round to seeing The Royal Tenenbaums, even though I really like some Wes Anderson stuff. Will have to try and see it.

It's easily my favourite film of his by a wide margin. That said, some of it I think is that it just really resonated with me personally. You know when a movie or book just hits at the exact time where it says something about your own life? I got that with this film when it came out.

I didn't really get on with Tenenbaums, I much preferred RUSHMORE. What a great film. I've only seen it thrice but each time was great.

Looking at that list, I can't really pick any. Best thing about 2001 in the UK was the release of the PAL PS2 and getting uncut versions of grotty Italo zombie movies like ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST released over here.

And that DVD of THE THING. What a DVD to own if you've only ever seen it panned n' scanned on a crackly old VHS tape*.

(*could've been 2002 when that came out so please don't quote me).

Having said all that about RUSHMORE, DT, I agree, I had a kinda similarish thang goin' on to RUSHMORE at the time, just add about fifteen years to age of both the main protagonists, that'd be about right.

              So many good/ important films!

I went with Spirited Away (even though it was released in the UK in 2003) as it was super important to me to see an anime that wasn't Pokemon/ Digimon related at the cinema. It shook up the stigma of animation being just for kids to some critics and opened peoples eyes to check out Ghibli which is always a good thing.

Even my mother commented about seeing this film spoken about everywhere (especially Johnathan Ross on TV), she never watched it personally though as she hasn't seen an animated film since the Lion King. I remember seeing it in the cinema for the first time and a mum freaked out seeing the injured dragon scene with the blood spplater and dragged her kid out who really did not want to leave.
