Oh that FotNS Fighter is one of the most beautiful 2d Fighters I’ve ever played. It’s an absolute gem.

New Generation was the 'arcade game of the year' in Japan, so we know that Japanese gamers still embraced 2D games. In the West, gamers tended to be focused on 3D, which meant 3D fighters like Tekken, Bloody Roar, Soul Edge etc... were really popular. I'd say that the Tekken series was the most popular fighting franchise in the West during the 32-bit era.

Of course, you still had the import scene where enthusiasts tended to share the same taste in games as Japanese gamers. I also remember arcades in London being full of hardcore gamers playing 2D fighters.

It really felt cutting edge next to what the Saturn & PS1 could do with something similar. And it has the special Nintendo magic that makes it so compelling.

It could have been a really dodgy licensed fighter, but the developer did a brilliant job. It's top quality in all areas.

The CP III board was such a failure Capcom dropped it, so I don't quite agree

I still remember just playing the Rocket Belt sections, with that classic porno music and being amazed at the graphics, what with, being able to fly anywhere with no polygon break up. Overlooking that, the gameplay was utter Nintendo magic and 10 out of 10

It was a successful coin-op in Japan, so some people really liked it. It's just a sad fact that some journalists were bored of 2D fighters, so they weren't very interested in SF3. Some of them were saying Capcom should be making cutting edge 3D fighters.

At least the SF3 series went on to find a wider audience on the Dreamcast and PS2 etc... I think 2D fighters became quite a niche during the 32-bit era, but there was a resurgence in popularity this century when artists could embrace HD. I think we've ended up with 2D fighters being more popular than 3D.

Look how crap the Street Fighter EX games are, it’s hard to imagine the appetite for them was bigger in the West than for SF3, yet it was. We were all blinded by crappy 3D polygon fighters

Well, the EX games are a bad example of 32-bit 3D fighters, even if some people like them.

I really liked Virtua Fighter 1 & 2, Fighting Vipers, the Tekken series, Soul Edge, Last Bronx etc... But I also liked 2D fighters like the SF Alpha/Zero games, Darkstalkers series, X-Men: Chidren of the Atom etc....

Maybe lots of gamers in the West saw 32-bit era 2D fighters as old hat, so they didn't appreciate the upgrade over 16-bit. I can appreciate why someone might have craved 3D fighters, even if I liked both styles.

Oh definitely, I remember playing EX on PS1 and thinking it was amazing. Tekken 3 blew my mind, back then the graphics seemed unreal. These days I stick to 2D Fighters, I find them much more enjoyable. I tried to play Rival Schools not long ago, and just couldn’t get back into it.

Yeah, the graphics seemed quite incredible at the time.

When it comes to old school games, I prefer 2D fighters over 3D. I'm happy to play 3D fighters from from Dreamcast, PS2 era, but not so much when it comes to 32-bit fighters. You saw a big jump in refinement when the Dreamcast appeared with SoulCalibur and Dead or Alive 2.
