Thanks Leon for getting the ball rolling, I knew I could count on you...

The best overall soundtrack of the 16 bit era is...

I used this opening music to scare two neighbours half death one Halloween as a teenager!

I don't have time to dig up links right now this second but, really, there is so much amazing 16-bit music but the two game series that make up the greatest of all time are Castlevania (already covered here) and Ecco the Dolphin. Both of those transcend their time and place and are as amazing now as they ever were. And influential too (for examples, check out Zombie Hyperdrive's Hyperion album or The Midnight who have a track called The Search For Ecco on their latest album which is a gorgeous tribute).

That Amiga Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts tune is AMAZING. Never heard it before.

Absolutely love the Amiga sound chip.

Go on, f*** it, might as well join the party.

I’m gonna go with a Mega CD tune as it’s not CDDA audio but uses the YM-2612 so perfectly acceptable:

Here are some of my favourite tunes from Mega Drive shoot 'em ups. Enjoy the 16-bit magic.

Excluding the Mega CD version because it’s cheating, I take your Sol Deace entry, Leon, and raise you:

It’s those arpeggios that get me going!

That Sol-Feace tune is good, but these jazz funk SNES tunes spank it into next week.
