Avatar is a rare mis-step by Jim Cameron. As a follow up film from Titanic too it doesn't sit well.
Its very well made, no doubt. His direction is spot on and even the script isn't exactly ****. The story itself just falls flat and flavour of the month Sam Worthington is so bland he can't carry the film. I don't know how this film became the biggest film ever and spawned 4 sequels and a disneyland attraction.

Immense hype about 3D and a chronic misreading of the films appeals endurability. I think after Titanic his interests had shifted away from storytelling and into a very literal form of film making. Avatar's story is largely loose nonsense to justify the huge amount of tech on display and it uses that tech well but is hollow as a film. That $2bn isn't earnt yet has led to the mistaken thought that it means it's a chance to be his Star Wars, his legacy, which is a shame because his real legacy as a film maker is so much superior.
