I'm certain there is a thread for this but I can't find it! What are the current VR options? That Oculus Quest 2 seems to be a total no brainer for ease and price and yet preferably I'd like to look at something that doesn't surgically attach my face to Zuckerberg's anus. Are there comparable options?

Depends on if you're fine heading down second hand options. -
Nothing even comes close at that pricepoint. HB Reverb G2 is better but out of stock everywhere plus a potential technical night mare plus the controller tracking is worse plus it's twice as expensive. Pimax is 3 x as expensive. Valve index is 3 x the price plus made of unobtanium.
A used Windows Mixed Reality headset might be an option.

For stand alone VR there isn't really an alternative to the Quest 2 currently.
HTC have a stand alone headset coming in 2021 (announced a few days ago), but details on that are scant so it's impossible to say if that is going to be priced to compete with Q2.
If you have a capable PC (and don't mind wires) there are more options, including the used market, I don't think it's worth seeking an original quest used as they're massively overpriced on eBay (and you'll still need to use a FB login if you're setting it up fresh now).

Used you've got the original Reverb, HTC Vive, an assortment of Windows Mixed reality (you can pick some of these up for not much over £100, but the specs & build quality vary a bit on them), Quest 1.
If you've got the cash and hardware to power them, the Index (with lighthouse tracking) or Reverb 2 (inside out tracking) will provide a quality experience. I do rate the Quest 2 highly tho, despite the FB login as it offers a lot for the entry price.Comment

Yeah, I would really much prefer the stand alone option and that's why I'm asking now rather than looking at this years ago. Being locked to a PC is very limiting for me, especially where the PCs are located in my house.Comment

The Quest 2 is the only option; no-one else is competing right now. It utterly destroys the competition in practically every area unless you're a user with specialised requirements.
It's also the only thing on the horizon. I'm watching for alternatives like a hawk but really there's nothing.
HTC have a new headset coming that is all in one, but they've said it isn't intended to be a competitor.Comment

Ignoring the Facebook issues (if you can), the Quest 2 is the cheapest thing out there, has brilliant tracking and the only devices with higher resolution (ignoring the specialist Pimax devices) are the Original HP Reverb and the Reverb G2. If I were you I'd get a quest 2 and if it turns out that Facebook are actually doing dodgy stuff you don't like then sell it on; you'll probably easy get £200 for it used even in a year or so.

Quest 2 now also officially supports SteamVR wirelessly via Virtual Desktop (you need Virtual Desktop app on Oculus Store and Virtual Desktop Streamer running on the PC with 5GHz wifi) and you've got wireless PCVR - side loading no longer required.
It's not absolutely perfect and you'll get the odd stutter here and there, but the very fact you can do this with Quest 2 at all is quite remarkable.Comment

Even better, it's definitely worth opening up whichever one you go forward with as there's so much bleedover in content within VR formats that it's never worth buying another headset just to try out the 1 or 2 games you don't have access to by defaultComment

Doubt that'll happen - suddenly walling off Steam (after adding it into your support to a fanfare) isn't going to make people suddenly start buying Oculus store games, more like throw their headset out of the Window, not to mention cheesing off the people by locking them out of being able to play games they've purchased. Besides, Oculus has been allowing SteamVR to run on their devices for a very long time now - the backlash would be worse than Battlefront 2 loot boxes.
Facebook make their vast vast majority of their cash slinging ads, not from the poultry amount from store sales, so it makes more sense to try and keep their users engaged.Last edited by MartyG; 11-03-2021, 16:25.Comment
