I currently play Live using NTL's 300K connection through a router and it's fine as long as I'm not hosting.

I have heard from various sources that NTL are increasing all their bandwidths this year, but there are conditions. There is an article in Web User (issue 102, page 6) about the "speed boost" and a spokesperson for NTL confirms it will be:

300K to 1Mbps with 5GB download limit at ?17.99 per month
750K to 2Mbps with 30GB download limit at ?24.99 per month
1.5Mbps to 3Mbps with 40GB download limit at ?37.99 per month

As for upload limits, it's believed to be 128K for each.

Apparently there is a download limit now, but NTL do not police it.

All packages include free activation and cable modem, but existing customers have to pay a one-off ?25 charge to upgrade otherwise they will keep their current bandwidth.

If I understand that right, it means new customers get a better deal and possibly NTL will have offers like half price for three months etc, so it will be cheaper to cancel your existing subscription and come back as a new customer albeit with a 12 month tie-in.

I wouldn't expect the prices to stay like that, the NTL spokesperson says in the article: "We upgraded our entire base earlier in 2004 - from 150Kb to 300Kb, from 600Kb to 750Kb and from 1Mb to 1.5Mb - at no cost to the customer. However, there is a large cost to this kind of exercise which we need to recoup at some point."

Nope. I have 1.5 meg now and have 256k upload. It differs for other packages. There is a rumour that this is going to increase by a small margin, to 300k on the 3Mb lines but that is unconfirmed. Could be worse, like the Telewest upgrade from 512->750k, where they just took 128k off the upstream and put it on the download (going from 256->128k)

You can check your upload on ntl by going to 192.168.100.1 (root/root) and checking the modem config.

It'll look something like this (example):

          Code:
General Instrument SB3100 Cable Modem: Hardware version: 1; OS: VxWorks 5.3.1; Software version: 3.2.9p

          System up time = 2 days 04h 56m 22.63s
          Ethernet multiple-collision errs.1 = 16
          Downstream channel ID = 3
Downstream channel frequency = 402750000 Hz
Downstream received signal power = 0.0 dBmV (or not supported)
          Upstream channel ID = 2
Upstream channel frequency = 40783269 Hz
          [b]QoS max upstream bandwidth = 128000 bps[/b]
          [b]QoS max downstream bandwidth = 600000 bps[/b]
SigQu: Signal to Noise Ratio = 34.7 dB
Cable modem status = Registration complete
Upstream transmit signal power = 55.0 dBmV
          Date and Time = 2002-09-07,19:42:57.0+00:00
          Configuration filename = mota4100-silver.cm

****. I considered switching from my rather expensive ADSL connection to their 300k package, in an attempt to save some money. But a Gb a week isn't exactly unheard of, even before nebulous things like how much downloading I've done through playing Live games.

How much download bandwidth does online gaming use, in particular Xbox Live? Is there a way of working it out?

WOO!! So very soon I'll have a 3mb line! How good's that?

40gb per month download limit is way over what I need - I don't download that much music or porno so I'm OK. I only use my net connection for t3h forum and Live!

I wonder how much data is downloaded after 1 hour of Halo with voice? 30mb or so if that even? That works out at about 6gb per month for me.

OpenReach were recently installing FTTP down our road and so I decided to bite the bullet and went for a 1Gbp connection.

I'll automatically get upgraded to 1GBp when they can be arsed.

So, a smidge faster than when you started the thread fifteen years ago!
You were chuffed with 3 Mbps!

                        Fast.com says 220 down, 18 up.

                        (both wired)

5G WiFi gives me 420Mbps, phone data is 38Mbps.

Amazing really. Although UK speeds still suck.

Also, just realized this was a resurrected thread - kinda fun to see people 15 years ago getting excited about a 3mbit line!

My internet has gone backwards since 2005!It’s amazing how you can adapt to crappy internet when you have no choice.

I recently got a 5g router just for big downloads which can do up to 150m/s. Unfortunately it’s locked to strict nat so is useless for online gaming!
