I saw this tour advertised on Facebook and was confused for a second as I thought "Wait, Jack Whitehall is in a band?!".

Jack White is implementing a "phone-free" policy at his upcoming live shows, so fans can enjoy a "100% human experience"

Why would she not go to a gig because her phone was in a pouch?

        Thanks, that's a cool idea.
It's a shame people can't seem to limit themselves to a few snaps, but spend ages zooming in and out throughout the set. One guy had a tablet at one gig. Ridiculous!

When there's something ace, you want to capture it though, so I can see both sides of the coin.

Ash were great on Saturday. They don't seem to suffer sound-wise with just three of them, it's always a full sound, even in the solos.
They've a new album out, so played a lot off that, which is understandable when you've been playing "Kung-Fu" for a few decades, but they also had loads of hits in there from all their albums, even "Uncle Pat" from 'Trailer'.

The crowd were nuts though, with loads of moshing and crowdsurfing. Such a great atmosphere.

Support band were Death By Unga Bunga, whom I've never heard of, but they were the best support band I'd seen in years, not for the music, but the spectacle.

The lead singer looked like Keith Lemon, but he was prowling the stage like he owned it. The drummer was this burly, mustachiod dude in a denim vest and the guitarist looked like a total nerd, but they were great.

In the final song, they played a snippet of "The Boys Are Back in Town", doing the dual solo, then they all flipped the guitars behind their heads and carried on playing! The song continued into their own one, but at one point, the drums stopped and the burly drummer beckoned to the bassist who went over and then they started French kissing! That caught me by surprise!

When they finished the set, they spent about five minutes all shaking hands with each other.
I've not laughed that much with a band for ages.

I saw them on their merch stall and congratulated them on a great set and the guitarist's lovely Peavey Mantis.

She thought that her phone would be away from her person so she couldn’t be contacted in an emergency. I did explain the Yondr thing to her but she’d already made her mind up. Thing is she wears an Apple Watch so even if her phone was in a pouch at the gig she would still be receiving notifications anyway.

*OT* I hate how addicted people are to their phones. My good lady isn’t bad but I have a mate who was at the John Carpenter gig with me the other night and he only put his phone away long enough to buy another drink! *OT*

Aye, it's a sad reflection of where society is at that people are willing to give up on great experiences because they can't stand not to be on their phone for two or three hours.

I'm guilty of videoing songs in the past, but I have my own code of max two songs per set and only hold the camera at head height.
That means I'm seeing 95% of a show and I'm not spoiling somebody else's experience.
Those pics above I took to tell people how ace the show was and ask the guitarist on Twitter what his guitar was.
Both bands liked my Tweet, so it's also encouraged to a degree.

It's like there's no middle ground for some people.
You know how photographers in the area in front of the stage are only allowed to take snaps in the first couple of songs, then are escorted out, they should suggest something like that.

At Iron Maiden the other week, I seemed to have a column of people filming, blocking my view of the stage, so I moshed a bit left, got a better view and was a lot happier, but I shouldn't really have to do that.

I take pics and video stuff (no more than a few 30 second clips or so) mainly because I have an atrocious memory and these spark it later. I'm like that Guy from Memento and without these reminders the experiences could vanish forever.

Apparently taking photos and videos actually makes you more likely to forget what you have just witnessed.

I can only assure you that I am absolutely brilliant at forgetting things I haven't videoed.

I’m intrigued about that solution but at the same time I’d rather people just learnt to do better about these things rather than having to rely on yet more technology to police what should be an issue of common sense and decency. Same issue with people who think it’s ok to talk loudly through gigs - I’d rather have them learn some ****ing manners rather than have everyone forced to wear mandatory ball gags.

So I jumped in the car straight after work and drove up to Manchester to see Carpenter Brut play and it was amazing!
It was a really good set, not leaning too much on the new album, but cherry-picking the bangers.
The screens behind were showing a selection of Italian horror and science fiction films re-edited to look like CB films.

Franck Hueso is pretty intense and intimidating, mocking the back of the crowd, saying they were asleep.
Guitarist, Adrien Grousset, looked badass throughout.
It was a curious atmosphere for a gig where people wanted to dance a bit, so it was a party atmosphere, but not much moshing or the like, which made a nice change.

I ended up right down the front and it was great!

Support act, GosT, wasn't really my thing and it dragged a bit. I don't really get dance acts playing live and I'm never convinced they're actually doing anything when they're slightly adjusting the knobs on their various boxes.
I'm pretty sure they just hit play and mime they're doing something.

Likewise, with Carpenter Brut, I sometimes struggled to see where the backing track stopped and the band began.
The live album (which is amazing) makes it a lot clearer to hear the guitar riffs, solos and wailing, but there seemed to be a filter on the guitar last night that masked the natural guitar sound.
I never saw him step on any effects pedals, so who was changing the sound from autowah to clean to distorted?

I guess it doesn't matter, really, because it was a brilliant gig.
A bit like saying driving an automatic car isn't as good as a manual. If you enjoy the ride, does it matter?

I guess I'm an old skool rocker who appreciated musicianship (of which CB definitely have) and an in-built suspicion of any live acts who mime...

                          Glad you enjoyed it, QC!

I’m also glad you enjoyed the gig QC, that’s a great picture by the way as well.

I’m gonna be controversial here about all the synth based gods, I think once you have seen that type of band live once there’s no need to see them again, at least not until new material comes out. I was tempted to take in the Brut London gig but setlist was the same as when I saw them, they have it down to a T.
I’m really hoping to catch FM-84 or Gunship live as they have more of a lead vocal, cannot believe I missed tickets for The Midnight, may try and get some resold tickets in new year.

Shouldn't rub it in but I got tickets for The Midnight. Really looking forward to it. Yeah, I'd love to see FM-84 too. Gunship haven't played live yet but I know it's on the cards. They don't want to do it until they can put on an amazing show and I know some of that would be dealing with what QC mentioned - I know they won't do a show where they go up and press play on a bunch of tracks. They want to do it live and so I guess there is some figuring out in how they do that.

Do any of these bands you're talking about have live guitar and drums like CB?

Keytar is not a valid answer.
