  • Tsuukin Hitofude Review - Nintendo GBA Polarium Advance

Tsuukin Hitofude Review - Nintendo GBA Polarium Advance

Tsuukin Hitofude (or Polarium Advance as it’s known here in the UK) might seem a strange choice of sequel. The very fact that a Polarium follow-up has appeared on the Game Boy Advance and not the Nintendo DS may come as a surprise to those who played the original, seeing as Chokkan Hitofude (meaning “intuitive stroke”) was a puzzle game specifically designed to take advantage of the touch-screen and stylus control of the DS.
For whatever reason, most gamers didn’t take to Mitchell’s puzzl...

Ketsui: Death Label Review - Nintendo DS

Like a lot of modern-day Japanese shooters, Ketsui is held in high regard by that particular gamer that sees bullet patterns every time they close their eyes. The discerning kind of gamer who prefers the panic-inducing delights of a bullet hell – with its twitch-inducing memory tests and increasingly fragile flirtations with collapse at every turn – to any lavish fantasy world or storytelling so many of today's development houses are keen to peddle.
Not that Ketsui isn't a labour of lo...

Pool Edge Review - Nintendo Gamecube

One of a handful of subsidiary software companies producing for Nintendo, Japanese developers NdCube were formed to broaden the range of exclusive and original titles for the GameCube and GameBoy Advance. They are perhaps best known as the uncredited co-developers of F-Zero: Maximum Velocity on the GameBoy Advance, and also to a lesser extent, the cult futuristic racer Tube Slider for the GameCube.
Pool Edge was their first GameCube title: a pool simulation, nonetheless, released exclu...

    EX Troopers Review Sony PS3

One of the complaints levelled against the first Lost Planet was that the environments were too similar – snow and whiteness as far as the eye could see, save for the glowing orange weak points on enemy bodies. The sequel shifted the locales to include a bit more variety, but EX Troopers – a spin-off from the Lost Planet series, set in that very universe – completely shifts the focus again, giving the presentation a very Japanese, very anime look. Is this simply a case of a game with a new...

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Review - Nintendo Gamecube

Much admired by gamers who stuck with the Nintendo 64, the visually creative Paper Mario has finally spawned a polished sequel on the GameCube. As Paper Mario RPG begins Mario receives a letter from Princess Peach, and dutifully sets sail to Hoodlum Town, only to discover Lord Batsugaruf of the Megabaten has kidnapped her. From here the player embarks upon a quest to collect seven Star Stones, stop some diabolical evil, and rescue the Princess. Along the way Mario visits an unusual forest and a...

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Review - Microsoft Xbox360

The Ghost Recon series of games have a long and illustrious history with the good folks of Bordersdown. The community took both Advanced Warfighter titles to their collective hearts, engaging in countless hours of co-operative action resulting in many happy memories and a clan whose moniker, Team GRAWsome are still talked of in fondest of terms. In the intervening years, it appears that Ubisoft has struggled to reshape the series, struggling to make it relevant in a market that is increasingly crowded...

Melty Blood Act Cadenza Review - Sony PS2

Those of you who’ve read our Doujin Fighters feature will already be familiar with Melty Blood. If you haven’t read it (and you’d better have a good excuse) then here’s a recap: The Melty Blood series of fighters first sprung to life on the PC as a collaboration between TYPE-MOON and French Bread, two Doujin software teams. The game itself is based on TYPE MOON’s visual novel Tsukihime, which revolved around a young boy called Shiki Tohno. Recovering from an accident Shiki discovers h...

  • Medal of Honor Review - Microsoft Xbox360

Medal of Honor Review - Microsoft Xbox360

Medal of Honor uproots the classic World War 2 FPS franchise and brings it bang up to date with a modern day setting. Taking place in Afghanistan, the player assumes the role of a number of different US specialists during their operations, spanning several days of the war on terror. While at first it seems as if EA have pulled a Modern Warfare on the series, after Activision's similar rejuvenation of their own Call of Duty line, the similarities are nothing more than superficial. Whereas Infinity...

  • Hyper Street Fighter 2: Anniversary Edition Review - Sony PS2

Hyper Street Fighter 2: Anniversary Edition Review - Sony PS2

The original Street Fighter was mostly remembered for the pressure sensitive pads originally used on the arcade cab, but what a lot of people don't realise is that eventually they were switched for the six button layout we know so well today. Likewise, Akira Ni****ani was tasked by Capcom to produce a scrolling beat 'em up using the Street Fighter name a couple of years later, but in the end it turned into Final Fight. These two factors then combined a few years hence, and produced the uber-classic...

Terminator Salvation Review - Microsoft Xbox360

Terminator: Salvation is a third person shooter based off the universe that has been created around the titular movie. The developers, Grin, have set the story before the film, neatly segueing in with the cannon from the novels to cover a crisis of faith in the adult John Conner that eventually led to the formation of his unit seen on the big screen.

  • Motion Gravure Review - Sony PS2
    by Archives
In this image-obsessed industry, it's critical that a game projects a strong sense of identity. With an identity comes a target audience. Sony have arguably captured the 'twenty-something male' flag and, to consolidate this position, Sony Music Entertainment releases this: a game featuring nothing but scantily clad females. Oh, and some very nice scenery.

  • Devil May Cry 3 Review - Sony PS2
    by Archives
Family reunions tend to follow one of two distinct protocols: everyone meets up, reminisces and has a good old chat and a laugh; or everyone meets up, reminisces and remembers why it’s been so long since they last saw each other, the evening ending in a ferocious argument. Why is this relevant to this Devil May Cry 3 review?
The latest meeting of the divinely comedic twin siblings of Dante and Vergil falls rather violently into the second category. Something about their murdered mother’s amule...

  • Silent Hill 3 Review - Sony PS2
    by Archives
Fear. It’s something that collective consciousness values as a desirable commodity, especially in the pop culture spin of everyday modern life - An element that mainstream entertainment likes to use in distilled form when it comes to getting a rise out of our adrenaline glands. Whether it be watching the latest slasher flick, experimenting with the next extreme sport or avidly reading the current best-selling horror fiction… On the whole, we take pleasure out of being scared. Read this Silent...

  • Viewtiful Joe Review - Nintendo Gamecube
    by Archives
Pink Lycra. There just isn't enough of it in video games. So Capcom have bravely stepped-up to the plate and given us a game, starring a Hot Pink hero, clad in a spandex jumpsuit, that isn't afraid to be laid back and humorous in style, whilst containing some rock-solid gameplay at its core. Like a piece of candy with a stone centre, Viewtiful Joe is sweet and tempting to the eye, but underneath is solid rock. Our hero is introduced in the opening cut-scene as a bubble-headed, California-accented Sk8r Boi, o...

  • Castlevania: White Night Concerto Review - Nintendo GBA
    by Archives
Castlevania: White Night Concerto is the latest instalment in Konamis Castlevania series. It is the second title for the GBA, but the first Castlevania game appeared on the NES back in 1987. It is ostensibly a platform game, like its predecessors. Certain things have remained constant throughout the series- in all but a couple of Castlevania outings, the main protagonist (in this case Juste Belmont) brandishes a whip. Secondary weapons are also available. Again these weapons are the same as tho...

  • Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Mugen no Frontier EXCEED Review - Nintendo DS
    by Steven Walker
For the uninitiated, Super Robot Wars Original Generation Saga: Mugen no Frontier (Endless Frontier) is an action-RPG spin-off from the popular Super Robot Wars series. The player has to use attacks to keep enemies in the air in order to do maximum damage, and string together as many attacks as they can. Timing and knowledge of characters' moves is the key to success. SRW OG Saga: Mugen no Frontier EXCEED is the sequel, and goes to show that a follow-up can be better than the original.
