Got this over the weekend and played it a little.
First impressions are mixed.
The main GP mode is ok. Races are up against 23 opponents over 3 laps. However most of the early level courses aren't very challenging. There is a choice of 36 racers, but the ships can't be customised.
The gp mode gets interesting later on with some better track design.
Graphically the game looks stunning, with some beautiful transparency effects and detailed sprites. Speed wise its fast enough, but not as fast as some of the other F-Zero games (although I'd need to do a side by side to compare properly). My only slight quibble with the graphics is the draw distance, which seems to be a little shorter than the original GBA outing, again I've yet to compare this properly.
Other than GP mode there seems to be an ill thought out mission type mode, which initially seems varied, but runs out of ideas fast. Completing the same 6 challenges with all 36 racers isn't my idea of fun.
If anything can save this game, then it's the track edit. Players can now create their own tracks. Watch races on them. Race on them or share them with their friends via a password system. Already I'm seeing a fledgling scene developing on the net for this mode. Which is probably where most of the fun is to be had.
