Although it won't have the instant impact MGS 1 had when it first came out (1st 3d game of it's type, the whole look etc) I have to agree and say it does just edge it!

So interested in the Metal gear series decided to play through the MSX versions as well now.. ^_^

Even the replies there are in here are limited to about 5-6 people posting frequently. And all because Kojima let it slip quietly and without fanfare onto the market.
And it's because of that that only we few will be voting it GOTY. Generic Dross #97 will walk with the title. At least we'll have a clear conscience. Your 9/10 review didn't help much either, putting people off as it did

      Mezzanine -

there are a couple of points during the ending when you can R1 without prompting. The first is when president is shaking Big Boss' hand you can see Adamska "Revolver Ocelot" Shalashaska doing his pointy gun stance/ wave at you. The second is in the cemetary when BB is saluting the grave of Boss. You can see the rest of the graveyard, but it spoils the emotion of the scene if you ask me.

I'm on the frog hunt now, third time through. Those sods on

      the motorbike level

are going to be the worst thing.

Optimus - I think I'm going to try the MSX version as well

I haven't quite finished yet, but the...

"battle" with The Sorrow has been one of my favourite sequences so far; eerie, unnerving and ambient served with a dollop of "what the fudge am I supposed to do here?". I particularly liked the way you came face-to-face with the spirits of those you have killed. A nice feature from Kojima and co.

The Sorrow was a good sequence in terms of atmosphere, and it was impressive graphically for sure. Problem is, first time through I'd killed more people than Dr Shipman and the thing just went on and on. Second time I drowned myself and avoided the whole thing. The camo you get from The Sorrow is good though - guards can't hear your footsteps so you can just run at them and CQC their asses before they know what's hit them.

What does The Fear's camo do btw? It just says "adds stealth ability at the expense of stamina". Stamina goes down like the titanic, but I can't see any decent advantage in wearing the damn thing.

Silly question; How did you obtain The Sorrow's camo mate, do you get it automatically after the sequence has ended?

I'm not sure tbh... first time I played it I walked all the way to the end of the river and found his skeleton there. As soon as I touched it he killed me, and when I came to I'd got his camo.

Ta' fella, I never thought to check my Survival View after the encounter. I managed to snag The End's camo, which is useful in jungle terrain, guards can't see 'owt when you've equipped that.

I'm curious as to what will happen next time I come across The Sorrow. I'm up to the mountain base now, third time through, and I haven't killed anyone. If I can keep that up, it should be a pretty odd sequence. Has anyone else done this yet?

                    RE: Chad.

                    I've done it.
The sequence with The Sorrrow is definitely shorter when i first challenged him - because first time through i went texas chainsaw on all the guards. However, second time through i didn't kill a single soul, plus i tranq'd the bosses too, which i thought would not appear in The Sorrow boss fight. The dead soldiers didn't appear, but the bosses did :/

5 hours in, just beat the pain. I dunno, its just not clicking.

I dont like the new stealth, its like i have to "un-learn" what i gained from MGS and MGS2. Im constantly getting spotted, im constantly crawling from A-B. The bit where you have to make it into the wearhouse was awful.

The story so far is superb but im getting worried that MGS 3 hasnt impressed me. With MGS and MGS2 i was in awe instantly.

Hope it gets better as i improve. Also i think the survival viewer sucks. Having to pop the menu up every 10 minutes just breaks up the flow.

Im huge MGS fan, so this is somewhat dissapointing

Not necessarily remember the guards have the same vision field as they had before if they don't see you, trianagle based, (just see it in your minds eye based on their position) it seems to increase though once the alert status is raised, or if they get suspicious (*recalls being spotted a screen away by some pussy engineer ) , remember to use the d-pad for stealth, analogue for speed. When you do get caught, use that time to scout the area before you die, plan your route for the next run

It gets better the more you play it.

Really? So i can approach them from the side without being spotted?

Cool. I keep slitting guards throats though, i press O lightly and Snake lets go of them >

Whats all this business about havin to watch your weight??

                            Comment

I wouldn't advise approaching from the side. I actually think they've got better peripheral vision this time.

Also I wouldn't bother grabbing them from behind either, unless you plan to use them as a human shield. If you mess it up you'll get spotted, that was the mistake I kept making first time through. Just tranq them and move on.

Watching weight? You sure you're not playing some sort of Bridget Jones game by mistake?

                              Comment

From the side? Remember their field of vision from the previous games: it's the same, you just can't see it. Approach from behing, using Sneak (D-pad), not analogue.

Hold O for a second until they 'urk!', then do your other task (such as L3) quickly.

Watch your weight? You have to watch your stamina. When the bar is low, eat something.

Edit: similar to what Chad says
