Having taken a wee half hour just toying with the CQC I am getting pretty good at it!! You dont have to be that close to grab an unsuspecting guard. I noticed this cause at first I kept sneaking up to close and he would turn round, On approach to an enemy press O as you walk... this will ensure you grab as soon as in range!! Also, you need to hold O donw slightly or they will wriggle away!! Controls take a bit of getting use to, but am finding that putting in a bit of practice is REALLY paying off!!

Found a AK-47 early on too and it is amazing, rat-at-at-at-at-at, hehehe!!

Am now finding myself able to grab one guard, use as shield, head head shot a second while holding first, throw down the guard am holding into the dirt then roll up to third guard, grab him and slit throat!! If you work on the moves you can do exactly what you see in the cut scenes, it is great!!

Have only just met Eva and fought the guards after you sleep... loving this game for so many reasons and it is just going to keep getting better!! Fantastic!!

OMG I just figured out it was circle to do all these fancy ass moves, its absolutely awesome!

        I am such a n00b

Also what the hell is up with all these little green frogs?

I have improved drastically with the CQC after a bit of practice although I still find the controls a little hard to use in frantic situations where you can't see what's ahead of you.

Eg I hope I've not missed too much where you pretend to be a scientist - I wandered past the guards OK but the other scientists kept staring at me and alerting guards from the other side of the room! I could barely see them and only when I went to first person did I know what they were up to. All hell broke loose so I had to de-equip my white jacket and start cleaning house! Managed to almost get back out until another scientist caused another ruck... had to flee into a duct and wait it out since I was low on ammo.

After that though all was well again.

I've adjusted to the pace now and realised I had to really slow it down and make use of the various goggles and sensors more. So far it's been big open areas instead of corridors with only one way to go in previous MGs. Sneaking around in grass, priming targets for the kill using CQC is pretty satisfying when you pull it off. Just got done with The Fear and since the beginning, it's improved at a rapid rate... hopefully it carries on doing so.

It does The end of the game is so much better than the beginning (and that was already excellent, IMO)

I am at exactly the same point as you

It was that damn scientist in a library that spotted me through some windows. He got a bullet in the knee cap for doing that

I loved that bit because I

got spotted immediately...somehow. So instead of trying to fix it and hide, come out when it was safe etc, I went on a rampage with the shotgun and AK47 I killed every guard and scientist in there just for the sake of it I felt horrible about it afterwards (you might know why ) but it seemed like a good idea at the time

That's what I love about this game. It's possible to do anything you want to do to complete the mission, but there's always consequences to doing things like what I did (although it just meant more cannon fodder for the shotgun!)

                  What made me laugh was

how you take off your face camo and put on the scientist jacket but still wear that bandana! One scientist walked right up to me as if to say "who the f*ck are you trying to kid?!" Bleep! AK-time

The whole alert thing is more manageable than I thought. A mate finished this a while ago and said one of his biggest gripes was that if you're spotted, it's literally game over as escaping is nigh on impossible. I'm pretty sure he played it on Normal and I've not come across any situation where I haven't been able to either sneak away quietly or spray bullets like a madman.

I've found myself getting so into it that I whisper expletives at the TV if I'm in some grass scoping out a nearby guard and a snake bites me. Or when my stomach growls. Don't wanna be giving away my position you know

I don't think I was that drawn into it but I was close. I was talking to Snake during the game as if it was me though... On more than one occasion, if I got spotted I shouted out a few expletives and during the end I was shouting at the screen. By this point I didn't care any more...I'd forgotten I was playing a game and I was just enjoying myself - "Get him Snake! Kick his ass!!"

That's what I loved about it though...it's just a great game. You play it, you enjoy it as an experience and not just another game. It's much, much more, IMO

I just finished MGS3 and it's absloutly wonderfull.

The ending is also the first ever time I propley cried over a game, and it has one of the most adult and touching stories ever told in a videogame.

                      Fantastic!

How playable is the japanese version??What I mean is, is it easy to play without undertanding all the cidec sequences, as they are pretty vital in the first two games the first time round.

Is there any translations up on the net, or has someone typed out the story yet on an FAQ, as playing the game without the knowledge of the story and codec bits kinda defeats the purpose of playing an MGS title and it's really a whole lot less immersive that way imo too.

Or am I wrong this time around, has anyone here played through the jap version yet and was it any good without being able to take in the story or the
codec sequences?? I am desperate to play this title, I really have to get a jap copy of the game though, I was tempted to maybe buy the Korean or Asian versions of the game to see if they had an option for English text, but no where on the net seems to confirm or deny if they do.

I heard the korean version has english speech with Korean subtitles, but that could be bull****, and i really only trust the guys on this forum for that kind of info as I have been stung many times before with bad info off the net.

If anyone here has played through the asian or korean games and knows what language options they have, please post and tell me, as it would really help me choose which version to go for this week. Also if anyone could help me out if they have completed the jap version too in telling me how playable it is, i would be most grateful

Although I have the PAL version you've pretty much answered your own question.

MGS is usually okay to play without the codec and cut scenes, although at some moments you would definatly struggle. Metal Gear Solid 3 is a game that's story and plot is part of the game, if you remove the understanding of it, you've lost half of the game's appeal.

I really reccomened you purchase the NTSC or PAL English language versions as you'll then get the full enjoyment of the game in your language.

It wouldn't be half as good as it is if you didn't understand the story. I don't know if the Japanese version has English subtitles or not but you need to understand the story to get any kind of enjoyment out of it, IMO

I didn't cry at the end but I'd say I was sad about it. You're right, it was a very mature ending. Not many can pull off such a sophisticated and serious end to a game of this magnitude, IMO. The end cinematics were incredible and really did closure to the story

I hope MGS4 follows this story on but also takes place in multiple timelines to explain what happens after MGS2

WHYYYYYYYYY!?!??!?! Only reason anyone gets JPN games is because they are usually out before the US copy. Its out in PAL land so get it!

Does the japanese version have a japanese audio track? it's just that in the demo when you meet sokolov(monicle wearing dude) he compliments snake on his russian and I was like wtf!? eh? did I miss something. And the voice acting seems to pause between sentences, feels weird since the the voice acting of mgs2/1 was really good.
