    Metal Wolf Chaos

    Official Site

    Had most of the morning dedicated to this...

    A little back-story...
    A military coup d' etat has emerged taking over America (lead by the Vice President) and it is up to you, the 47th President; to don your 'Metal Wolf' armour and take back America!

    So it seems a fine game. Though don't expect any Armoured Core type shenanigans in terms of mecha customisation. Apart from choosing from a set of 8 weapons to equip your machine in (4 weapons for the left hand and another 4 for the right. However on some occasions, certain types of weapons will take up both hand slots) and buying and 'researching' weapons, that's about your lot.

    Weapons range from pistols/ assault rifles/ bazookas and rocket launchers. Your main way of attack is the dual weilding combination of weapons which do have ammo stocks, so you wont be able to plug away forever. Although ammunition found throughout the stages are plentiful.

    Action as you would expect is frentic, with foot-soldiers/ armed watch towers/ tanks/ blackhawk helicopters among many gunning for you. As in tradition with FromSoftware, destructable environment is aplenty. Though not quite as much as OTOGI where mountainsides and the ground itself could be made to cave in. With Metal Wolf Chaos you wont be able to raize full blown buildings to the ground. It's mainly the smaller stuff like signs/ metal cargo crates enemy vehicles and so on.
    But still, much fun.

    Each stage has set criteria (mainly blowing up the yellow checkpoint dots on the map) then proceeding on. Nothing too confusing so far in my playtest of the first 3 to 4 stages thus far.

    Graphically it seems very accomplished, with a type of 'fuzzy shine' type filter (seen in OTOGI 2) being used. Explosions, heat hazes look fine. Nothing too dramatically bad or exceedingly good to point out.

    Sound wise, the voice acting is as cheesy as you can get. With your Personal Assistant sounding like you would expect, and the President being some kind of 'cowabunga surf dude' type attitude.
    The intervening cutscenes on DNN carry the same cheese.
    I usually berate poor voice acting, but in this, it kind of fits it well in a tongue -in-cheek poke at America, with it's left field storyline.
    Strangely enough, you can have your own custom soundtrack playing on the menu screens.

    With the controls, it's 'TYPE 3' where:
    up = look down
    down = look up
    left = rotate left
    right = rotate right

    If you're weird like me, and prefer to have:
    up = up
    down = down
    Then choose 'TYPE 1'

    Types 2 and 3 seem to keep whatver the 'up' and 'down' axis are. but they change the the 'left' and 'right' directional axis, where:
    left = rotate right
    right= rotate left

    Overall, it seems good if you like no brainer action with lots of explosions and gunfire to keep you entertained.

    Wasn't too impressed with this myself - Suspect Mech Warrior 2 will fulfil my needs on this front.

    Graphics not really cutting it considering how far we've come with xbox, sound and story about the best things as they're so Jap wacked out it's brilliant - Brings back memories of "All Your Base"

      Done the first few missions and so far I'm enjoying it. Not at all keen on the weapon select method, very clumsy, but other than that (as you said) it's no brainer action.

        Just wondered whether anyone else got this audio glitch?
        On the Alcatraz stage, when they're talking about the 'Alcatraz Cannon' the line where someone says (to that effect)

        "I'll zap you back (skips here)... West Coast"

              On my way to completing this on the 'Hell' difficulty (unlocked once completed on Normal mode) with only about the last 2 stages left. The only difficulty i've found on Normal mode is the penultimate boss' 3rd form of attack, and the last boss' 2nd form of attack.
              I've tried them on Hell difficulty and barely lasted. It was frustratingly hard on Normal mode as well.

              Apart from that, the rest of the game wasn't as difficult (even on Hell mode, where it's not quite as hard as the name suggests - since they have slightly more health than before, and a few more enemies) since the previous bosses were more of a case of using your minigun to destroy the oncoming missiles and then pummel the target with your bazooka/ stinger missile launcher. You don?t need to use that many evasive manoeuvres either. Though since most of the bosses consist of war machines such as attack helicopters/ tanks/ battle ships they won?t be moving fairly swift to evade your attacks either, so it?s just a case of plugging away with your arsenal until they die.

              With repeated plays over the 13 missions, most last at about 5-8 minutes on average with a couple or so taking about 20 minutes to complete. Three of those stages could be considered as dedicated boss battle arenas only. So what we?re left with is around 9 regular stages (though 2 of them are timed and will last about 5 minutes or so. Maximum) with more or less the same objectives e.g destroy the designated marker points on the map.

              End verdict:
              It's a shame that most of the missions are played in similar fashion, where you basically steamroll through the level blasting everything in sight, without any real need for tactics, or to be evasive.

              5/ 10

              (Though if I were harsh, I?d say about a 3/ 10 or 4/ 10)

                  Funniest game I've played in a long time.

                  President: "What's my schedule like?"
                  Assistant: "Well, you've got a conference and dinner at the Japanese embassy to discuss the environment."
                  President: " Ah, yes. I'm afraid I'm going to have to cancel that; I've got to go and save America."

                  Hilarious stuff.

                    Sweet Jesus it gets WORSE than that. Overall the game is turd, but with truly inspired and surreal dialogue.

                    As for the stupid nonsense with unavoidable uber-weapons, that's a Takeuchi oversight. He did it in Murakumo and both Otogi games.

                    Roll on ACE is all I can say...

                      I'd hoped after all levels are cleared you do get back to White House and continue where you left with your lovely PA on the couch... wouldn't have been great to see that as a reward...
                      he he
                      mmm....

                      I agree I played it on TGS 2004 demo disc and wasn't that impressed... let's see whether they're going to increase the difficult level when it gets released in US...

                        Bizarrely enough, i can't stop playing this. It's not that it's spectacular, it's the fact that i'm permanantly in zombie mode blowing things up.
                        I can see how this will sell in America...

                        I've pretty much completed the game fully, Normal/ Hell/ Alien hunt. All that's left is getting all the joke weapons.
