Some nice set pieces, sure, but I've seen it all before, and seen it done better.
I've heard people say this kind of stuff about Doom 3 many times. Tell me, what were you expecting? It's DOOM, so of course it's all about enemies jumping out at you as you run down corridors blasting. That's what Doom has always been.

I really think some people bought Doom 3 without having a clue what they were going to get. Doom 3 is EXACTLY what it is supposed to be, and it excells at that. I can't think of a better straight up horror FPS. Lights out and sound up it's outstanding.

If you wanted more depth, then there are plenty of other games out there which can give you that.

I played some online co-op last night and that was fun, but the jumping framerate wasn't.

I can see this game collecting dust once it's been completed though.

Can anyone confirm wheter the US NTSC version is 60Hz and region free?

Like all my other titles to be honest.

My problem with the game? Too bloody dark and I sometimes can't be arsed to change between torch and weapon so just take pot-luck shots into the general area I think the enemy is. Quicksave means I don't have to worry about dying

Environments ok, enemies models basic, weapons average (weak sound), audio excellent (except for the AWFUL footsteps!) level design well presented (so far) and corridors are numerous (how I long to be outside). The tension is very high though. It's Doom with no enhancements in gameplay, just visuals and audio.

I do like the way the symbols appear on keypads And the Devil laughing Will we ever get a truly supernatural game to play?

I have to admit, that I have really enjoyed this. I definitely agree with most of the posts here, it does feel like the last 8 years of game design hasn't happened, it certainly isn't a patch on the likes of Halo and HL2.
There is however quite a few times when all you want to do is run down a well rendered corridor chainsawing anything that moves and it gets hard work on the higher difficulty settings.

Now that I've finished it I have some final thoughts: Technically I like the look of the game and the 5.1 audio is superb, but I didn't like the lack of 60fps support on the PAL version and once you've played a few levels, the novelty soon wears off and it becomes repetitive.

There is no way you could have Doom 1 or 2 amounts of enemies in Doom 3. The hardware just isn't capable of handling it, especially not with the the lighting model and heavy pixel shader use in D3.

                  Maybe next gen.

For me they should have tried to retain the ethos of the original i.e being completely overran by enemies and circle-strafe-blasting(TM) your way out of it. I remember everyone crying out when Quake1 launched because of that lack of enemy numbers but that was a different game so fair excuse - This is DOOM and whilst they've retained the scares I don't think they've retained the originals design ethos (I don't believe it was their intention to do so !).

TBH The inclusion of the originals playable co-op is the best thing about this - But even then, Doom-X runs sweeter and I think it's system linkable (?).

For me, Halo comments about making 30 seconds of good gameplay and stretching it over the course of a game is what made the original doom so good. This has that 30 seconds of 'good' gameplay but it's all a bit stale by the end of Alpha Labs (IMO).

As technically impressive as it is, I don't see much improvement, if any, over last year's The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Now I've played them both I had more fun playing Chronicles of Riddick.

i picked this up recently on the cheap - and i can't play it! it scares the bejesus out of me, and i have no idea why?!

spooky games don't really bother me, i breezed through GC Biohazard, and thought Ravenholm was a laugh, but this just gives me The Fear. maybe it's the blank, plasticky mannequin faces of the NPC's or the flickering lights and whatnot, but whatever it is it rattles me unlike anything else i have played.

                        how ****ing absurd is that?

Yeah I picked this up too last week. The collectors one.

I had actually got the PC version when it came out and was bitterly disappointed at the time and never finished it. So why I got the XBox version, I have no idea. And yet, I'm enjoying it much more this time around. I suppose partly it's that I have got over the fact that it is not Doom - it is its own game just based on some of the creatures contained in Doom. Partly it's that I am so much more comfortable with console gaming.

But, yeah, it's creepy stuff. The sound is what gets me - the sound design is genius. I have to say too that I'm well impressed with the XBox version. It looks just as good as the PC version and the control is really smooth. Are some of the levels different? I seem to remember slightly larger outdoor sections between airlocks and having to search for air tanks whereas in the XBox one I made it easily to thenext airlock in a couple of seconds. Could be just my memory but some of it feels a little different.

I'm at Delta labs now. Getting the impression it's wrapping up but, yeah, I'm enjoying it so much more this time around.

                              +1 for xb Doom3 love.

I love Doom3, it's one of these games that you should think is ****, it's so shallow and repetative but I had an awesome fear buzz going on whist playing it.

Really injoyed playing the game, i might fire it up. Also in case anyone didn't know, the PAL version is 50Hz only (well ****ing done Activision) but the USA version is region free. So if anyone is a 60Hz nut then the us verison is available.

                              most horrible bit -

whilst in the bloody bathroom bit you look into the mirror and it all goes horrible

I never bought the add-on disc but maybe a should

Yeah, I may track down the expansion after I finish this. Although I heard some things about frame rate problems and so on.
