    Space Invaders DS

Not had a chance to look at the new mode yet, but the classic game is woefully predictable. Firing is automatic and hey, there's a joystick on the bottom screen that you can control with the stylus...

Once again the DS proves that innovation for the sake of it is utterly pointless, no wonder everyone was laughing when I switched this on.

I'll post some more impressions after lunch.

Does anyone actually like Space Invaders? I know there's the retro chic factor but I've always thought the game just plain sucks, I hope this game sells zero copies.

that's just not space invaders... timing your shots is pretty much where half the skill is! do you still only get one shot on screen at a time with this option?

can you play classic mode with the d-pad & turn auto-fire off? if so, how does it stack up against the arcade original played like this... & what's the sound like?

most importantly: does it have high score tables & does it record which options (e.g. auto-fire) you used to get them?

What's the New Age-mode like? Is there any unlockables? What kind of "new gameplay" is there?

So far I've encountered the following modes.
Narrow Invader - The play width is half the size of a normal game
Super Invader - Kill giant space invaders
Division Invader - Shooting white invaders divide them in two
Shadow Invaders - Invaders phase out and disappear for a few seconds
Million Invader - Tiny invaders that prove hard to kill as they're so small
Armoured Invader - One lone invader requires multiple hits to kill and it moves very fast
Direction Invader - You have to kill invaders in order without shooting any others
Invader Storm - Invaders chuck loads of bullets at you
Doppleganger - An old school space ship fires down at you from the top of the screen.

The touch screen has several weapons including barrier, support, rapid, stop and laser, but I've not worked out how to use thme.

Too be honest though, I'm still finding this incredibly dull. The PSP compilation sounds much better.

Old, old games + New input method = A Bit of a Mess (tbh)

And that's the DS's biggest problem. When a game is created with the machine in mind, the outcome is often wonderful. When they try and do a Rayman, Ridge Racer DS, Retro Atari Classics or a SPace Invaders, it just doesn't work.

Is this the same as the forthcoming Space Invaders Revolution?

All machines have games that don't take advantage of the system- this is just another example. I suppose if someone is a mad SpaceInvaders nut- they will get some fun from it!

These retro collections need to end, either do proper remakes or just release a huge chunk of unaltered versions in one collection.
This was bound to be ****, and that they forced stylus support on it is just unfair to both the game and the machine.

AND RIDGE RACER DS WAS GREAT! ( just not nearly as great as RR on the PSP )

Ridge Racer DS is not great its an ample port with a great multiplayer.

I agree 100% the DS is about making games that suit the control methods and the screens like your Kirbys/Pac Pix ect, games like Mario do not feel 100% right. It will be interesting to see how Animal Crossing and Mario KArt turn out control wise.

please don't get me started on whats wrong with Rayman DS the controls are good when compared to the rest of the game.
