    Forza Motorsport (Xbox)

    Impressive.

Been playing this for about 12hrs now and its bloody excellent but obviously not perfect. You cant help but compare it to GT4 but in all honesty its a well designed and structured game in its own right.

    16:9 - Yes
    480p - Yes
    Custom Soundtracks - Yes

Graphically its up there with Rallisport Challenge 2 as one of the nicest racers on the Xbox. Its artistic style appears to be very understated, its not flashy or over-shiny but it looks very good with some courses definitely looking better than others. The car models look great but not as good as whats in GT4 but given the damage model that in here its forgiveable.

Sound is average and a bit of a letdown. 5.1 obviously but engine noises are very weak even when you get to the meatier rides. Its acceptable but seems to lack grunt. The Junkie XL soundtrack you'll either love or hate but custom soundtracks sort that out.

What makes the game is the handling, personally I love it. Forget what you think you know about the demo, the demo was utter **** and this is a completely different game. Even the earlier cars (I started in Europe with a Golf R32) handle great and it just gets progressively better with the newer classes. Hard to find fault at all here.

Also the game is VERY easy to begin with but once you start hitting the races where you must start configuring your vehicle setup to get in under the class restrictions it starts becoming much more challenging and the AI is pretty much some of the best Ive seen.

On that note, the AI is sometimes a bit odd but I believe (unless Im wrong) that it learns from your driving style and treats you differently based on that. There were times in the initial courses I spun out taking a few cars with me, drove really aggressive and basically didnt give them an inch... because of that it seems they were happy to shunt me in the odd heavy braking routine.

Now though, mainly due to the higher difficulty and driving more sensible lines they seem to be giving me much more respect and space. Its impressive anyway and a huge improvement over whats in GT4, Ive even seen some of them competing against each other for 1st place and clipping each other forcing themselves onto the gravel... nice!

Structure-wise... the menus are ok, nothing crash hot but just ok. Has a bland feel to it but it works and the customisation of the car from parts to decals to tuning is all there in easily laid out format.

Online? Awesome. There is one thing I dislike, the ability to turn off the racing line assist as a toggle option when hosting. With 8 people racing though it becomes a small issue. Think PGR2 in terms of lobby design, including the race map view when your spectating... have had no lag in any games locally and some excellent races. I believe this is what GT4 should be when it eventually gets its arse online folk, except its already here. A wealth of scoreboards on offer, ghost downloads etc... Just on a grand scale.

All up... a great 9/10 for me. Its not ultimate racing nirvana but where it counts in terms of physics, handling, online and customisation it has what you need to put in hours of race time. An excellent start to a new racing series. I look forward to Forza2 on Xbox 360.

    Buy it.

Thanks for your views on the game. Sounds like it has good graphics- ok sound and excellent handling. The demo was obviously a really early build- I was watching some vids recently and it has improved beyond my expectations.

I will be buying this on release- 13thMay in the UK.. right???

      came out in Australia today.

am i the only one that thinks that the speed representation is totally off? i race a decently fast car, and in a track like Japan, i approach a corner feeling like i'm doing 80-100 and begin to brake nice and early, only to find the car really doesn't drop much speed, so i start to panic and look down and realise that only NOW i'm doing 120-150, and getting intimate with the wall in inevitable. take a car in japan, slowly accelerate to 150, and just then pay attention to what the scenery moving by looks like? i swear it looks like youre looking into the distance instead of close by stuff, and im finding it really hard to judge breaking distances without them feeling like i am breaking way too early for what speed i THINK i'm doing.

Richard Burns Rally had this same issue, and both claim to be hardcore sim racers (Forza does, doesn't it?). you just don't feel like you're going as fast as the speedo tells you. which means you kiss a lot of tire barriers. i hope i can get used to this.

I really hope the handling is as good as what everybody says, till now I've only read the US reviews ... I hope the handling of the cars is just as good as GranTurismo and DTM2.
I can't wait to get my hands on it and start racing on-line !

I`ve been playing the demo i got from game quite abit and the differences in handling is quite astonishing. To really feel the handling of each car turn of traction control and stability management, i still leave abs on and each car really does feel different. Out of the demo i found the porsche GT3 by far the hardest car to control as all the weight is right at the back end of the car and you can loose it quite easy. Where with the Ferrari modena the weight is more to the middle and handles better. Far better than GT4 handling imo especially with a pad. Can wait till next friday to pick this up.

            Force.

Its feels very much like an combination of DTM2's track racing, GT4's customisation and basically PGR2's online system.

I dont find the sensation of speed bad at all to be honest. It isnt 60fps which is a shame but its rigid at 30fps and I have yet to see any lag online as well... with some of the faster cars the speed is there but sure its not Burnout3 stuff.

If your a fan of racing in general this has definitely has something to offer. Im still only a partial way into it but its already one of the best racers Ive seen on Xbox and I havent been able to put it down.

I thought the handling was very poor, far too sensitive, making it difficult to hook up the corners. The game feels more like an arcade game than the sim it was hyped to be.

Call me bitter and twisted but you just know there are going to be 13 year old American kids driving round the track the wrong way, parking on corners, and using your car as a brake ... but I suppose you will be able to set up friends only rooms ?
Is there much unlocked from the start or is it one of those games that is going to take an age to unlock all the really good cars ?

I found most of the Americans to be quite good on the racers online. Seen way more English players , playing up on the likes of TOCA II and moaning becasue thier ranking was going down .
Once I got kicked Off TOCA II becasue I was Welsh

It's HALO II that I find that the American kids play up, and play on my nerves .

regarding the "american kids get on my nerves" xbox live issue:

why don't you guys just switch to german language servers? german, austrian and swiss xbox live players are usually much older and, most of all, the better team-oriented players! on top, the majority of german speaking players have good english skills and communicate nice and friendly!

I picked it up last night and played about three hours. I'm really happy with it. Now I just need to learn how to tune a car.

Not sure about the S & R class cars as I havent got that far yet but all the cars in my Garage can have a range of alloys, there is approx. 30-40 types in the upgrades sections.
