Garou Mark Of The Wolves (PS2)

    No thread for this yet?
Impressions from a Neo fanboy then. It's not as good as the original. But it aint bad either.

I'll get the bad news out of the way then - it's the whole sprite resolution thing again. Feckin PS2 and it's jaggy sprites, or rather feckin developers scarred of using low resolutions. Still, it's certainly not the worst culprit and offers progressive scan, 3 screen sizes and an AA "softening" option so you can get the best out of it. I have my PS2 on my plasma and for me that means 480p, screen A and no softening. It doesn't look nearly as ropey as certain KOFs or Darkstalkers, (even CFJ) but the Neo version on a CRT floors it, I'm sorry I can't guarantee zero missing animation or sprite reduction either I'm afraid.
Anyway, there's the anal neo-fan gripe out of the way, forgive me, certainly don't let me put you off, for the money this is still a must buy if your platform is PS2 folks.
It's by no means a lazy conversion. It's not bursting with extras but the L.E is nice, as is presentation and the intro will have you gagging for more Neo Geo online collection stuff to come. There's an arranged soundtrack but unfortunately the original one..well, isn't really, and there are stop/start glitches a la DC.

Very much on the plus side though - it plays perfectly so far, there's very little loading and effects still look pretty.

Overall then a solid 2D -> PS2 conversion by current standards. I'd love someone to compare this and the DC version head to head as I haven't played that in ages and it'll be a future FAQ on the forum I'm sure. All I can say is look at the jaggy low res intro sequence, sacrificed for high res "Press start" text on it. It's WRONG Playmore, stop it!
If you love MOTW enough, grab a MVS setup, if you love it enough for a quick blast on your PS2 this'll do nicely.

              What the...?!

Unless I'm reading it wrong, the comparison being made is unfair - PS2 version on a Plasma in the highest-res mode? vs NG version on a CRT?

I'm still waiting on mine arriving (Probably been bagged by Customs...)

                    As for the sound issues:
So far, i've heard non of the sound-lag which the DC version had, whenever a character grunts/ shouts a special move.

Just a question for Super Monkey Balls:

Are the character sprites the correct size (or near enough) ?
Also i'd like to gauge your opinion on the graphical quality of the two machines when viewing both Garou's on CRT's?

Definitely prefer the PS2 conversion over the DC one, mainly for because they fixed the sound/ different screen options. Gameplay wise, it feels the same.

MOTW is the best beat em up ever done...after SF3: 3S that is =)

If anyone doesn't own it yet...what the hell are ye waiting for?

so you'd prefer inferior graphical quality, just so that a little sound looping is sorted out???

he'll your right, someone give me the playstation version of kof 99!!!

i actually think the reason the they dont lower the resolution to original res is because so many people(especially in japan)actually own lcd/plasma screens which would look horrendous in the original neo resolution.

Yeah, you're right, there's no such lag like the DC version, I just noticed some timing issues with the bgm, probably due to the media. I'm often disappointed they can't get the original music quite right as well, unlike Sega Ages with its glorious arcade perfect stereo.
Sprites did seem a tad small to me but I might be wrong. MOTW doesn't have the biggest sprites on the Neo anyway. I certainly can't be bothered hooking the PS2 up to the other TV for a head to head As I said, DC and PS2 comparisons are more relevant.

Enough criticism though. It plays right and there are better screen options than a lot of PS2 2D fighters anyway.

Had a quick go of the game (got it today).Looks like a adequate conversion. Practice mode seems similar to kof2003 with the usual array of options.Just like in kof 2003 L2 does a quick automatic combo. The sound seems improved better quality (only played the arcade version a few times though). The soft graphics option i think was good gets rid of the pixelally look.I would have liked at the least some ps2 exclusive backgrounds though
