    Rainbow Six : Lockdown XBOX

    Rainbow Six Lockdown.

Got this in stock today and within 5 minutes i had sold 5 copies, admitedly 3 went to one guy who purchased some for his fellow clan mates but still, I thought maybe i was wrong about this game being the same old formula.

Greeted by some nice FMV and the same old music revamped felt quite good, it's alot nicer on the menus and it's pretty easy and slick to navigate about. Level 1 starts "Rescue The President in a Car Park"

...Yawn, I thought, how many times have I ran through area X saving President Y. After checking out the graphics which are alot nicer than I had seen in screenshots I was impressed and ready to gun down some terrorists... well i thought i was ready. This game is just another rainbow six, which isn't bad at all but playing the first level really left me unimpressed with how the game works.... where is this new "sniping" bit... why am i doing the same old crap i was doing in the first rainbow six on the PC...

Still, I felt the same way about Black Arrow with the single player campaign but I did enjoy the game Live. I have yet to see Lockdown Live because my Xbox refuses to go online, but i'll no doubt take home one of them tonight and have a little look.

Meh, It's just my taste in games at the moment, I have seriously played too many of these shooting games, while they might be brilliant sellers for us they do not make me want to play it at all. GR2:SS is great but it's the same old game. Not impressed with it, so that means ?30 saved for fahrenheit!!!

I was going to pick this up, won't bother now though. Reading your impressions and a few others over at another board, it smacks of yet another identikit-FPS, which are plentiful on the XBox at the moment, so I'll save my ?30 I think.

Ive never liked the single player of RS, however the live mode (as usual) is whats attracting me.

Reading through that, im very interested and will be picking it up tomorrow. Im liking the new turn to half and half Counterstrike and Battlefield.

Ive had a few hours play now, here are my impressions.

Firstly, the game plays pretty much exactly like Black Arrow. The controls are easier, the gameplay tighter. Lag isnt too much of an issue, even when playing with americans. I was playing with about 7 of them earlier and not one problem.

Im sure what you all want to hear about is the new online career mode, so here goes.

          You start off having to make up a custom character, quite a big selection of characters and faces- so yay. Then it asks you to choose a proficiency, you have a choice of;

Commando - Has access to heavy weapons and armour quicker than others and less recoil on guns.

Spec Ops - Fast moving, specialises in sniping and hacking. You have a PDA which is used to hack into points around the map, and views the whole map via a series of cameras. Also carries a knife for stealth kills.

Engineer - Can set up gun turrets around the map that can be used by anyone on his team, and has a keycard than can open or close doors around the level.

Medic - Can heal team mates, set up medical centers around the map to be used by his team. Also carries special nerve gas which will kill without a gas mask, so can be used to block entrances and such.

Having these four types really does help promote teamwork, as everyone does need to work together in order to succeed. The whole thing everyone is thinking about is the points/ranking/level system. You dont need to worry.

The way it works, is that you start of at a level 0, you are given training points which can be used to upgrade you damage, accuracy, or recoil.
But you need to upgrade your proficiency on each and every type of weapon/armour/skill you have. You only get 1 point per level, and each weapon/gun/skill has at least 9 points of upgrade- so noone will be able to be "superpowered" over your character.

As you level up, different abilities are unlocked for each class. For instance, I want my knife, but i wont get that until a later level, so I currently use my other skills, and upgrade them. Commandos get access to armour at level 6 or something, so everything evens out between classes.

For each game you play, you not only gain point or EXP, you gain credits. This can be used to buy new guns, more grenades, different types of grenades, claymores, explosives- the works. Also, some of you things can now be damaged, for instance, im a spec ops dood, and my PDA got damaged because it was shot while I was using it, I then had to repair it for a cost. Anything can still be used while not in top condition, so there isnt an over reliance on credits either.

The live interface itself is pretty much exactly like Black Arrow, but more streamlined, and so far whats impressed me is the little touches, like bullet holes in your visor and such. So far im very impressed and hope alot more of you buy this. Its top.IMO at least

In regards to crashes etcm I havent experienced a single problem yet.

Hmm that live aspect sounds excellent, but I'm not sure I can justify another shooter so similar to BF2. Battlefield is my gaming life at the moment, nothing else is coming close.

Bullet holes in your visor?? That sounds pretty fatal to me.

Well, i've spent a few hours with this and I've come to the conclusion that it's horrible

Too fast, boring maps and the lack of a consistant one-shot head kill pretty much defeats what R6 is all about. Oh, and the lighting in the maps piss me off. Some parts are too dark to see in, but you can't use night vision as there's a light in the distance that floods your vision instantly. Overall, it reminds me a bit of Counter-Strike more than R6, but without the good maps.

This should have been called Rainbow 6 Letdown

agreed the character models and animations suck ass too!!

if you remember what gabe logan looked like in syphon filter for the ps1.......thats what these guys look like running around.

how can a team normally so talented, stuff up the rainbow franchise soooo badly??

its like playing a third rate shooter most of the time, and i agree about the pace and lack of 1 shot kills.

also the fact you have to buy frags every round is ridiculous(and frags are about as useful as a fart in a spacesuit, since the teams run so quickly!)

maybe it's because even broken games cost a lot of money and publishers don't seem to care anylonger for quality in their products? but why should they as the uncritical mass of gamers is happy with a game or simply doesn't notice lack of polish or technical bugs!

also, i wouldn't call it hate about a game. i just don't like to be fooled around with by money-minded publishers and lazy developers.

the fact remains that its not a patch(in any department) , on rainbow six 3!!! and that was made in 2003 ffs.

I guess the no voice comms in system link was a conscious decision by Ubisoft to foil the dirty pirates who play over x-link kai.

No, not your tastes, but its the XBOX experience! The most underwhelming console of them all! Roll on more war games x360 in November!
