I think the key to you enjoying this title, is for you to stop making comparisions with the GB AW titles. It got a name change so it would stop people comparing it, they've set out for a totally different gaming experience which they've achieved.

    It's one amazing title.

Ahh, and so the grand legacy ends, with another console version in the series, and this time one that ditches the strategy element (don't give me excuses about name changes, they won't be making a traditional Famicom Wars title for modern consoles after this).

Based on fishbowelhead's spoiler description, I can safely say I will not be buying this now. Cheers for the info, FBH, that is precisely the kind of thing I want to know when considering a purchase!

About as bad as I had expected then.

Is it a bit like darwinia?

I was afraid the name change was so they could distance themselves from the far superior GBA and DS games, many thanks for confirming that. Giventhe first play descriptions and from what I have seen it just looks like a jumped like Army Men game, which is a BAD thing, but I haven't played it so treat this comment as speculation only please.

If it iholds no relation to the Advance Wars games then I have no interest in it.

Seems it is just a 3D shooter with AW similarities used to bridge the gap for all those who "dont get" what Advance Wars is really about.

Hope you enjoy it boys, but it doesn't sound like it is for me!!

If you want a console version, you could try tracking down the NES/FC version, or the ultra rare SNES/SFC version.

I've played both, and they are incredibly similar to the GBA versions, except different.

It seems they removed and streamlined the SFC version when making the GBA games, and so you have less vehicles, since a lot of vehicles were combined together. EG: APC + Fuel Truck = APC Refuelling truck in the GBA version

Plus the CEOs are different. Not a major difference, but I chuckled. Plus, the GBA games actually contain all the old maps from the FC and SFC games. I was very pleased when I unlocked the "old maps" thing from the guy in shop. I was like "I remember you!"

Probably not different enough to warrant purchase, but well worth ROMing. You can see how the series evolved (and now mutated).

Once you've seen them, you'll realise how sad it is that they didn't use the Gamecube to make a proper current version in a similar strategy vein. Sometimes images of a proper console update of the series pop into my head, and it saddens me, since it will never occur.

Well it certainly wont after this 3D imposter. My GBA and DS versions are enough to keep my grinning for now man, but thanks Szczepaniak.

Your mutated reference made me chuckle

By the way, that is one **** of a name you have, lol. Dont wanna even start trying to pronounce it

Indeed. I'm glad my credit card stayed in its pocket last week. Dammit I was looking forward to more Cannon Fodder too.

Oh well. Time to break out WinUAE again

There's a guy who worked on the game speaking over at RLLMUK, it might be worth raising fears about difficulty with him, since he may be able to set your mind at ease.

Think the pc game darwinia is probably the closest to a modern day cannon fodder similar game play in that you control a group of units and you shoot an throw grenades.Just set in a different enviroment and there is more rts style play possible

Must admit I am slightly surprised by the low key reaction on here. Over at RLLMUK they are raving about it and they are the biggest moaners going Are you boys being a bit pernickety? I've ordered it from therage, and am really looking forward to it.

I'm a bit shocked by the negative reaction that seems to have come through the last day or so. Its an AMAZING game.

I've played the first 7/8 missions and havent had one single frustrating moment, a couple of retrys sure but nothing that wasnt down to my bad tactics in the first place.

The game plays great, simple commands using a very good system on the GC pad, gorgeous visuals with all the Advance Wars charm and most importantly extremely satisfying combat moments. I think someone mentioned taking out a helicopter, its a GREAT feeling, as is storming in with a group of tanks and facing off against the enemy whilst your infantry scrap it out alongside.

What I love the most is that you can play any part you like, sit back and dish out orders, go ride the tank, fly a plane, go head-first as an infantry or just sweep round in a recon vehicle, its entirely up to you.

I urge anyone who was considering getting Batallion Wars to do just that, its the biggest surprise in a long time for me

Id have to say that this is pure gaming fun and has kept me away from a few games this week as.

As it stands the missions are fun, the mix of tactics and action seems spot on to me, your there in the thick of it trying to identify the most deadly target and get the right sort of troops attacking the right dangers and when you get it right and you get that high rank it just spurs you on, yeah you can hammer your way through on some missions but your not going to get a high score that way.

The levels seem nice and varied and I've found there are lots of ways to approach them and the advance wars style seems to have been carried across nicely, so for me I?m glad I haven?t sided with the naysayer which I almost did, I would have missed out on this great game and I?m glad I didn?t

I love it, I've just had other things get in the way of it over the past week or so (Ninja Gaiden Black and now Far Cry and Castlevania). I'm going to sit with it as much as I can at the weekend I think
