    Fifa 2006

Managed to get an early copy of this from a mate. Now I know that Pro Evo/Winning Eleven is far superior gameplay wise, and it's never more noticable that in the latest incarnation of the fifa franchise.

The squads are there of course and the gameplay is slightly improved and obviously graphically its a little better, actually in truth its a lot better.

Having been at Winning Eleven 9 a lot recently I'd gotten used to no commentary, and I think I'm gonna have to turn off the commentary on Fifa 2006 as well. Andy Gray says the same thing over and over, most of the time it's ridiculous as well : "Get in in, quick and well" and you've already crossed it in a the first available point, so its ridiculous. I'm playing the manager mode (as usual) and the commentary is stupid if you choose to play each match yourself. For the first 10 or so matches it always starts with "This is so early in the season that the result is almost pointless, its a time for the players to test themselves and the manager to..." etc. After 10 games it changes to one of two things, either "blah blah blah injuries at this time of the season" or "blah blah blah but with one key player missing it could make all the difference". That is the biggest problem audio wise, otherwise its fine.

So, gameplay. Unless its my eyes, I've noticed (several times) a visible AWFUL slowdown, but unlike a normal slowdown, not skipping etc. This is more of a picture catching up with picture, very hard to explain but makes my eyes hurt.

It's actually quite good once you get used to what seems like a really hiked difficulty level (even on easy). There is absolutely no consitency however, I beat Chelsea 3-0 and forgot to save, so I reloaded at that point and drew 1-1 despite playing my exact same lineup and style. Beat Wigan 7-0 at home, then away could only muster a 1-0. Frustrating but then football can be that way.

The teams seem really up to date, the only ommisions I personally noticed are that of Fabrice Fernandes to Bolton (from Saints) and Michael Owen not being at Newcastle (unless he was injured or on the subs bench). The kits etc are immaculate despite them having Bolton's 3rd kit as the away kit (obviously didn't get the new away kit design in time). The players look more real than ever which is impressive when you think of just how many players there are in the game.

Musically its the same old mish-mash of genres etc but this time there are "classic" commentaries, for example Cantona, Rooney etc. In fact the first thing you get what it loads up is a choice to play the classic XI which includes Cantona etc, its on semi-pro and I got battered. Other than that my personal playlist includes Oasis "Lyla" Embrace "Ashes" and a Jamiriqoui (sp?) song.

The game itself looks quite "fluffy" and graphically its pleasing on the eye but there's just something about it that isn't raw enough, Pro Evo has this rawness. In Fifa every pitch is immaculate no matter what the weather or how far into the season you get.

Overall it's a good game, it's certainly got me addicted but I've always been a "licensing" whore.

If you don't like Fifa there is absolutely nothing new that will entice you. If you like Fifa there is just enough new to keep you loving the series. I would give anything for a fully licensed Pro Evo, but for now I think I'll stick to this game, the manager mode is excellent and in 2006 there is none of the terribly slow menus.

The AI is at times brilliant but at times incredibly ****ing stupid, just running the ball into touch when no pressure is applied. The sliding tackle button is near enough pointless because the ref is SO over the top unless you time it 100% perfectly, yet some tackles that DO require a red card just get yellow. I've yet to see a straight red.

The only question I personally have is how different the XBOX 360 version will be because I was going to pre-order that but unless it is graphically FAR superior I don't see the point. I'd assume it will be since its also due for PS3, but sometimes with these games they don't do that. I'd also hope its smoother and there are no visual problems.

So in conclusion; nothing much new but enough to keep fans happy.

I think the XBox 360-version will have a World Cup 06-mode as well, but I'm not a sure. Just something I've read, maybe anyone knows?

For the XBox 360-version, I just hope they get rid of bugs and slowdowns, and maybe improves the graphics a bit (Well, the XBox 360 is more powerful, so that shouldn't be a problem, eh?). I also hope they update the transfers, 'cause Tiago is still at Chelsea, and as you mentioned, Owen is not at Newcastle. And I've read people saying that there are more transfers that just aren't up to date.

I've only tried the XBox-demo of FIFA 06, and I'm happy so far. Only negative is that I notice some slowdowns here and there, but it wasn't all that bad. After a while, I didn't care actually. I'll buy the game as I did like FIFA Football 2005, and as I said, I was happy about this.

The slowdown is very noticeable on the Xbox version I played and if thats present in the final version, that's incredibly shoddy. Like you say, squads and strips are a nice touch. I think there's a note somewhere on one of the intro screens to say the squads were updated at end of August.

I thought some of the forward runs by attackers off the ball were very well done and quite intelligent. Some of the player animations are superb, but the ball doesn't seem to flow naturally on the grass.

I'm sure there's a good football "light" experience in there, might be a good laugh in multiplayer?

FIFA's always great multiplayer, thats all I play it for. Rarely play against the computer, its too scripted and unexciting.

Playing against mates, when your both damn good at the game is great fun. Can either be all out attacking matches where your both scoring belters from 30 yards out with 4-4 games or proper defensive, possession games that end in 0-0 draws and go to penalties etc.

I love it. As long as its no worse than 05 and still has 'Off The Ball' then I'm happy.

Nice to know it is improving, but if the only thing it has over Wining Eleven are the licenses for teams then that is not going to put much pressure on Konami to make Winning Eleven even better.

Fifa games on XBox Live is brilliant.

No one should be without Xbox Live if they own an Xbox!

Get a 2 month free trial, hook up your xbox to broadband modem... and away you go.

                      Yeh, like its that easy.

I had a quick blast offline on the Xbox version and I was pleasantly surprised. Personally I am not a big fan of football games but this seemed to have plenty of depth and the gameplay looked quite involving. The ball behaviour was rotten though.

Mate got this today for PS2, played it for about 5 hours just there and I'm loving it.

It soooo different to 2005 but its aces. Really improved I think.

I made this post on another forum but I'm just gonna copy and paste it here :P

Straight away I was severaly pissed off because:

                        A. They've taken out 'Off The Ball' which was something I used ALL the time. It was like my main source of play, I played long balls alot with it. So it took me a while to get used to not doing that.

                        B. Free kicks and corners are completely different. I was god at them before and would score from both of them about 90% of the time. So now I cant do that.

And I'm sure there was a C. too but I cant remember it right now!

So anyway, first two games I struggled to get used to how different it is, its alot more tactical now, the ball isnt glued to your feet as much as before, so you've got to do the work alot more yourself now which is good.

So I lost the first 2 games and was getting severely pissed off. So took a break and decided to do the unthinkable and change teams, I always go Man Utd and always have. So I changed to Real Madrid and decided to play the game the way its supposed to be played, started making lovely passing movements and such, runs down the wings, lovely crosses in, or floating lobs over the defense into the strikers path etc. And it all worked, won 5 games in a row! Scoring about 15 goals overall!

I love this game now, so much more than Fifa 2005 and anything before it, they really have made massive improvments. I'm so happy.

Of course it'll probably be **** while playing the computer but all we do is multiplayer and its ****ing aces at that!

                        Good show EA.

My DS copy finally arrived today (used the CD Wow offer hence the delay....) I have been playing it pretty solidly for an hour of so and can say that I am really impressed with it.

I am a big fan of Football games and feel this provides excellent football on the go for the DS.

The controls & gameplay are pretty much identical to the home console version and the graphics are pretty decent as well.

There is good use of the touch screen as well not just for player radar but also for in game tactical changes.

One other nice touch is a single cart wi-fi mode.

If you have a DS and like Football, I would definitely reccomend this to you as I reckon you won't be disappointed.
