I have now got this, its pretty good but a bit overwelming especially some of the boss battles with 4 players also slugging it out, the main problem seems to be there are not player markers, so you can't track yourself in a fight, and as the game can pull you out of a fight with a pickup on character can collect and use (which transports you to a mini game in the middle of a fight no less!) it is made even more confusing when you return, still dam fun though!

I still haven't got this. I'm ashamed of myself!
I would prefer the Jap version, but I'm holding out 'til Christmas when I can grab this and VJ Scratch together.
Anyone recommend a good site to buy these from? I've held off doing so for so long because I'm put off by being bled dry by customs.

Looks like the PSP version is going to have some very nice DMC bonuses.

Are there any links to an english translation, as I picked this up for a tenner on Playasia but the menu is slightly overwhelming

I got the JP version in play-asia's sale. I wasn't expecting much - really liked the first game but VJ2 felt like more of the same and I didn't really have the time for it. Carnival has been a pleasant surprise. The single player campaign is great fun - unlike a couple of the people on here I'm finding the later levels a real challenge - the difficulty level really ramps up. It's somewhat like playing the hard levels of F-Zero GC where despite your best efforts a car can suddenly knock you off the track - in this case a sneaky combo by the opposition can kill your character and force you to restart (I do mean on the later hard levels - "win by 8000 points" etc) - there's a high level of tension because of this (you have to really pay attention!) but as everything's so fast and furious and the screen is melting it's good fun to play over and over again.
It's been a few months since I even had the GC on - for a tenner this is a pretty darn good game, and a good crack in multiplayer.

I'm quite enjoying the single player for some strange reason, soemthing I wasn't expecting, but the multiplayer is just a mess in my opinion. Too fast, too chaotic, I don't even know what is happening most of the time. I never feel in control of things and whether I win or lose I never really felt I did much either way. Maybe I just need to learn it more but these sorts of games shouldn't require hours of practice, things like Smash Bros and Powerstone 2 you could just jump into with 4 players and have some fun. With this it just feels like a mess :\ I read that the PSP version will be slower with less on screen due to it having less power than the GC and this could work in its advantage and make it a better game, but as far as the GC version goes I'm glad I only paid a tenner for it.

Well to answer your question really late, spag, yes I have the PSP version. It was in a 2 for one offer in Virgin so I picked it up along with Tales of Eternia.

I haven't played the GC version so I can't compare but, as already pointed out here, it does have DMC characters which are quite nice. When you've played quite a bit of DMC3 though, Dante feels just random and weak in this one. Still, he's a cool character.

Being honest, I just don't like this game. It's like they took Viewtiful Joe and removed the bits that actually made it a game, like they were hoping the basic mechanics would be enough. For me, the mechanics are just not sophisticated enough to carry a game without the actual game bits. It feels like a work in progress or a prrof of concept/

Cheers man, I ended up getting it in the 2for1 along with Kong. Its very much like the Cube version and wicked next to Kong (which I gave up on early due too the fact I couldn't see the grey giant crab against the grey rocks and grey sky). I'm gonna stick with DS VJ, although everything since Joe's first outing has been wide of the mark 5th Chamber aside.
