    Fifa 2006 (psp)

Having bought FIFA 2005 when it came out for the PSP and being totally disappointed I was a little hesitant to pick up 2006. The previews that mentioned that the framerate issue had been sorted and the promise of proper online play swayed it for me.

I've got to say that it's a marked improvement, very playable now with few slowdowns (free kicks just outside the box appear to be one area where slowdowns do occur).

The online mode is brilliant, not many people online just now but I'm sure there'll be loads in a few days. My only gripe is that it doesn't work flawlessly, took many attempts to actually get it into a match, most other attempts ended in a "a player disconnected" message right after the game had practically loaded after the team selections. Chatting in the lobby is a bit difficult if you need to type a custom message, but there are some basic phrases already available quickly via a menu (things like "want to play?", "2 minutes per half?", "4 minutes per half?", "good game"). The in-game seems to be well thought-out though with a limited number of game pauses allowed per player (these have a time limit too) and I think that if one player is winning and the other gets disconnected or deliberately disconnects then it counts against their record if the match is ranked.

Another interesting feature I haven't tried out yet is the team roster update, which looks as if it will allow you to download a full set of updated teams if/when EA release such a patch.

Having played WE9 recently the gameplay of FIFA is obviously different, WE9 still felt smoother as far as player movements.... I don't know if it was just sweaty hands but I had a bit of a hard time keeping my thumb on the analog stick when playing FIFA tonight.

Apart from what I've already said, FIFA 06 as always has slick presentation with some nice menus and licensed music as well as some reasonable commentary (a slight improvement over the last one). I've got to say that the crowd chanting seems to be very good in creating the right atmosphere during the game, it seems quite good and varied.

Initial rating based on first impressions: 8/10

Thanks for the impression, what game modes are available?
Leagues? Champions League? Euro Champ.? World Cup? FA Cup? Career mode?

are the squads quite up to date?

    thanks for the advice

Right, well as far as modes there is a season mode (doesn't look like it's the full all-singing all-dancing career mode with managerial add-ons that's in the full console/PC version of FIFA 06 - by this I mean stuff like the sponsorship deals and owner requirements) for pretty much all the leagues. The season mode also seems to be a one-off, i.e one season then it's done, once again not like the 'proper' manager role in the other editions.

The tournament mode has the main league cups, but as is usual for the regular FIFA release there are very few/none with the official names (i.e no FA Cup, it's just called either the English Cup or League Cup). By the same token there is no European Cup (even if there was it would be unlikely to be called the Champions League because they usually use that as a full license for a seperate game release) - ditto for the World Cup.

Strangely there's no international tournament in the defaults, but you can obviously create one using the custom tournament option. The one annoying thing though is that if you want to randomly populate the teams list for a tournament it picks pretty much any type of team, i.e if you select an international team for yourself and then try the random populate then it'll still select some club teams..... so if you want a tournament with only international teams you have to select each team yourself which is a bit of a tedious process.

Squads seem fairly up-to-date, Van der Sar is in the Man U goal and Ji Sung Park, Crespo and Wright-Phillips at Chelsea (no Essien there though)

I just tried the Squad Download feature and it doesn't seem to be enabled yet. My guess is that they might release one squad update after the January transfer window to keep the game fresh till September next year and FIFA 07

I tried the squad download feature this morning and it's working.

Anyone interested in setting up a small NTSCUK FIFA 06 PSP League? - online play is loads of fun!

Anyone having the 'A player has disconnected' problem when playing infrastructure mode?

I have played 4 games now, but have had connection problems with many more. I'm wondering if it's a firmware thing (1.5 using WAB version changer -> 2.0)?

I'm also using the WAB version changer.

I think the 'A player has disconnected' error is due to poor connection strength on one player's end. I had the problem a lot yesterday but have played quite a few games today that went just fine.
