    Midway Arcade Treasures 3

?14 new, not bad (got MAT1 for ?5 to). I mainly brought this just for RUSH2049.

Now to start off, these games are not fluid, im not sure if the arcade originals where like this, but there clear slowdown/jittering framerate even in the menu's(RUSH-rock is the worst fpr menus but the game is ok).

Best game on it is, RUSH2049. To my surprise its not the arcade game it is indeed the Dreamcast version, although it doesn't seem as smooth and has graphical problem in stunt mode when you crash, apart from that it supports everything the dreamcast version had... stunt, deathmatch, race modes, silver and gold medals are all still there as is all the tracks/cars you have to open, 4-player splitsceen and savable players Bios.

Hydro Thunder, enjoyable game and yet again seems to suffer from an inconstant frame-rate, seems to be the dreamcast version as well, though i can't remember off hand how well the dreamcast version ran(i got the dc version somewhere in my pack away).

RUSH:the rock, surprisinly enjoy and also alot smoother, maybe because it is a arcade port/emulation instead of a dreamcast game. Very basic, just Gas,Brake, Handbrake, very, very colourful like ridge racer and even has damage on the cars, tracks are enjoyable to drive around with plenty of shortcuts.

Not played the rest yet, the other games are

Off Road Thunder (i wouldn't be surprised if this is the DC version)
Super Off road + extra tracks
    Badlands
    Race Drivin'
    STUN Runner

I found this to be a terrible compilation and nowhere near the quality of the previous two compilations from Midway. It's also going to struggle in the value for money stakes, as it's in the same price bracket of compilations that offer two to three times as many games. Granted, there aren't as many due to the size of some of them, but joe public won't look at it like that...

Oh, and don't even bother with STUN Runner, the controls and speed of it make it practically unplayable. Very disappointing
On the other hand, I have Midway Arcade Treasures PSP turning up on Monday and that looks great

got mine today as well - ?9.99 from play.com

anway much like Tobal i only bought it for 1 game and that was Hydrothunder

smashing conversion and to be fair it might be the dreamcast version, but i cant remember the dreamcast version having so much water movement

think that conversion was just a lumpy road

anyway completed easy mode on it and it still alot of fun - remembering the short cuts brings a wee smile and thats the difference between 1st and about 6th, steering thru the ship on the arctic level and smacking into a penquin only to hear it scream and just disappear into the distance

what i have noticed is the lack of animation on the turbo - normally the engine opens up and you see extra parts appear and it stays there until your boost runs out, only damn the torpedoes has some slight animation

definately not as good as any of the taito collections - but superior than the tecmo collection which only really has rygar as a saving grace

and the capcom collection is just lovely as well

so overall a variety of games - could and should have been more but not the worst collection out there. But, the worst midway collection so far

I dont think this is the dreamcast version now as there is so much going in the background etc and i cant remember it on the dreamcast

like in the medium caves section there are bats a plenty in the caves and i dont remember them being in the DC version

still loving it and onto the hard courses now - worth the money just for this

Yep, the awful port of STUN Runner here is nothing like the arcade. They didn't even get the audio emulated properly. (Xbox version tested.) A disaster really, after all the delays to emulate this.

You're giving it far too much of a bashing.

My opinion is that at first, I was very disappointed with the set as a whole. Rush didn't feel like rush running at 60fps, San Francisco Rush 2049's very slight juttering while turning corners really put me off playing it, and Super Off-Road seemed too slow.

            HOWEVER.

The more I start to play the games, the more they start to grow on me. Let's start with S.T.U.N. Runner...

It's one of my favourite arcade games. While it's not arcade perfect in comparison to MAME (Far from it actually!), it's still the best home conversion of it. Definately not as awfully unplayable as you guys made it sound despite it being disappointingly different to the arcade version... I know the sound is different but I couldn't really care less about that. I still love playing it.

2049 is just quality. It's the first time i've ever owned this game. The only other time i've played it was playing the demo on the Dreamcast so this is relatively new to me. The little juttering round corners now hardly bothers me and i'm starting to get heavily into this! It's still an odd problem but hey.

I have very, VERY fond memories of the original SFR. I would never have been introduced to the series had my father never bought it for me for the N64, by completely random choice. I never played the arcade version but as I mentioned earlier, the 60fps put me off initially. Plays exactly the same as the N64 version despite the fact that the movies seem to freeze about 5 seconds into each one.

Hydro Thunder, first time playing this game aswell. Quite fun, but quite difficult! I'll have to give this more time...

Race Drivin, 60fps. What's up with that?! I KNOW the original wasn't that smooth.

Badlands, Super Sprint with weapons. Rock on.

Super Off Road + Extra tracks, seems a bit slow to me... I have yet to compare with MAME. Still fun, just slow.

            ----

It's definately got it's bugs though. I don't think this is an awful compilation, It's DEFINATELY inaccurate, but it's far from awful. Thoroughly enjoying re-visiting a few of these games.

Treat them more as almost faithful ports than emulated versions of the arcade games and you shouldn't be too disheartened by it.

See you on the Xbox Live scoreboards?

            ----

Also, sorry if this post is a bit jumbled up, or keeps jumping around - I'm not an amazing writer, and i'm a bit tired so i'm sorry if parts don't make sense.

Can't agree with you there mate, even the slightest movement sends your craft flying all over the place and it's pretty much unplayable because of it IMO. I still think the Lynx version is better.

Still, glad you're getting enjoyment from it I'm still gonna pick it up, if only so I can complete the set

Oh the lynx version is quality, I actually have it.

I guess that's fair enough though, I can understand what you mean. I just didn't find that too much of a problem here.

What version are all you guys playing, by the way? I don't know if it's different between platforms at all (Like the videos not stopping on Rush after every so many seconds).

                Running on Xbox here..

Just so I can check if this isn't a problem with my xbox...

                    Run RUSH: The Rock.

Do the videos just... stop half way through for you? (Sorry for going on about that one problem - I don't know why it bothers me so much O_o)

Also, i've just finished S.T.U.N. Runner, and apparently i've won a free t-shirt in the Ultimate Challenge by getting over 100,000ft!

                    (Offer expires 1990. )

                    ----

Can anyone PLEASE tell me how to get San Francisco Rush 2049 to recognise the cheats? I've unlocked the menu but none of the codes are working!

I'm not sure what version of Hydro is on the compilation. The PC version was actually sharper then all the others to my knowldge but S.T.U.N. runner is awful with a standard joystick. The movement is way to fast from what i recall.

Am I the only person that's completed and actually enjoying this version of S.T.U.N. Runner?

I got further on this than I did on MAME, I tell you that!

Yeah, the Mame version is poor too but i'm sure the arcade version ran at 60fps and Midway's version doesn't.
I'm sure that both this and Race Driving ran with a full framerate (hence the fact they were so smooth).

I could be wrong but they were definetely smoother. I only wanted those two games to run well. I've got the other stuff on other formats so i'm a bit gutted given that Midway were having a bit of a roll (IE they released a GOOD game or two this year!).

Could we sue Midway for claims of "Original Arcade Racer" when 3 main games(2049,off road, hydro) are clearly dreamcast games and poorly done at that?, but at least it made me get my copy of Rush2049 and Hydro for the dreamcast, much sharper and cleaner graphics, and much smoother, although 2049 does still seem to suffer for the corner slow down, but not as much as it emu/port on the more powerful machines.

On repeated playing of the rock, the controls get worse and worse as you go on to the harder courses, way to much oversteer your always fighting to get a straight line.

Bah! Screw you guys, i'm enjoying this.

Though saying that I don't own the originals of a lot of these... Which is probably why.
