Capcom classics collection Volume 1 - multiformat

here we go - arcade gaming mecca of collections - or is it

couldnt find a first play thread bout this so i thought i would start one

anyway - this is the Xbox version (American)

firstly this cost me ?16 and its well packaged with loads of info in the manual

the game itself boots up with all the different ways that capcom styled its name thru the years and the games title is hand drawn infront of your eyes - which is a nice touch

the game itself runs thru its intro which is very dramatic - using orchestrial music to plow thru all the games which has in game videos and the names popping up all over the place

once you press start all the bleeps have been taken from Streetfighter and it makes you feel at home as you know most of the games on here

there are 22 games to choose from ranging from all genres and including some of their best and most probably some of the worst - the whole screen is of a handwritten standard, all the games are in a list in the middle of the screen and which ever game is highlighted you have artwork for that game to the left and movie screenshot to the upper right hand side and on the lower you have information about the game - which as a nice touch looks like its on a post-it

each game has 4 options depending on which button you press:
    a: play
    x: options
    y: bonus
    white: high scores

the bonus is superb, on a ruled piece of paper you have all the information about the game and using the L and R button you can scroll thru tabs on the right hand side of the screen, this is where it gets interesting - all the rest of the tabs have a classified envelope and you have to perform certain tasks within the game to open these. These range from just playing the game to actually completing it with 1 credit to using specific characters, if you spend time on this the amount of extras that can be opened is quite outstanding

    the games
the games are all arcade perfect and to be honest i cant remember streetfighter the world warrior sounding so beefy before - even thru mame or at the arcades, i will just list the games as most people know what they are about - but i will state that some effort has gone into this, for example Forgotten Worlds used to use one of the analogue sticks in the arcades like midnight resistance or ikari warriors and instead they use buttons on the controller to turn your character around, just it will take time to get used to it as he spins pretty fast and you will end up shooting nothing and probably dying, the games are:
    1942
    1943
    1943 kai
    Bionic Commando
    Commando
    Exed Exes
    Final Fight
    Forgotten Worlds
    Ghost and Goblins
    Ghouls and Ghosts
    Gunsmoke
    Legendary Wings
    Mercs
    Pirate ship Hagemaru
    Section Z
    Son Son
    Streetfighter 2: the world warrior
    Streetfighter 2: Championship edition
    Streetfighter 2: Hyper Fighting
    Super Ghouls and Ghosts
    Vulgus
    Trojan

and if you havent noticed this title is actually called Vol 1, so at least Capcom have ideas about releasing more volumes in this collection - which would be superb

overall this is of the standard of the taito series - maybe Tecmo need to give these guys a call if they decide to release another retro package

go and buy it or get it on its uk release - 18th November

    Nice.

I'm looking forward to this now.

I have no idea why, but I look forward to these retro collections a lot more than most modern releases, despite the fact that i've played a lot of these games before.

Looks a great collection - i just cant wait to get my hands on Forgotton worlds . What i want to know is where is the original street fighter, ok it may not be a great game, but it seems Capcom have forgotton its existance, i have never seen it on any of their previous collections, not even on the Streetfighter ones.

I think they'd rather forget it existed.

I'm surprised such a crap game spawned a sequel in the first place. But hey

Good stuff Jason. Going to get this soon. Looking forward to playing all those classic games again. Vol.2 when it get's released should be excellent too. Would like to see Nintendo do a classic collection, but no, they sell them separately for ?15 a ****ing pop. Will they ever learn?

Hmm, I've already been fleeced for the 5 Japanese volumes, but I think I'll still get this. It'll be worth it just to see the Engrish in Forgotten Worlds again.

Sorry - i spazed that. This is a good compilation - all the games are very well converted, but extremely hard and uncompromising to retro game noobs.

I think Forgotten worlds is so well known because it had the 16 bit conversion on the Amiga (and ST).

I also want to play GNG again before the ace looking PSP game appears.

well its certain that these are definately arcade conversions - just mentioning since the midway treasures looks like dreamcast conversions

i could be wrong (eek) but its the first time i've seen the palm tree in Sagats stage make it on the home version, but its not there in Champion edition

but Ryu is a fanny - he is afraid of spiders!!!!!! - tsk tsk

It's quite a good collection, so along as you don't own any of the Capcom Generation games released on Sega Saturn or Sony Playstation.

Otherwise there aren't too many new games on it that haven't been released in a retro pack previously.

                    Bionic Commando
                    Final Fight
                    Forgotten Worlds
                    Legendary Wings
                    Section Z
                    Trojan

Are the only titles not in the Capcom Generation set. Mind you the price is worth it for Final Fight alone.

Let's hope for Vol 2 they put in more games that haven't appeared in a retro pack before. I would love to see Aliens vs Predator, 19XX, 1944, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs and Knights of the Round in the next pack.

Ive said it before, and ill say it again..i hate to be negative about Capcom but this really isnt good enough, just reprints of the same games released on PSX + Saturn plus a couple of extras, no filtering options!? Even SF3 on the Xbox had the option to take off the soften effect, Im a huge Capcom fan and I personally thought this was crap. The Mega-CD version of Final Fight purely for the enhanced audio pees all over this version and the arcade rom on the compilation has the edited intro. After the really quite good Taito and Midway collections I thought this was very average! Loading in between SF2 Turbo round!? What's that about! If it was a fiver Id say a bargain but ?15-16 jees, thats an expensive placemat. As for Alien Vs. Predator etc. as someone pointed out before Capcom, so it's said, are not allowed to release these licensed games as apparently the license has expired (much like the 'over the rainbow' music in Rainbow Islands) so cracking side scrollers like The Punisher will never see a compilation disc.

Is this different from the US version?

Also will the PAL release have a 60hz option?

I want to know if the PAL PS2 version will be on a stupid 'drive killing CD' like Taito Legends.

You'd assume a 60H option for PAL wouldnt you? What was the last PAL capcom game released without it? (*remembers DMC and shudders).

Its out in the UK tomorrow right?

It's on DVD, and there is no 60hz option.

                              On DVD? Thats good news.

So. How bad is the 50hz conversion? Are all the games still reasonably playable? I hoep so cause I preordered

Do they games run slow or are they missing frames like with PAL ikaruga?
