    Star Wars Battlefront 2

As far as the first game goes i didn't really enjoy it that much i played it on both the xbox and the ps2 and neither really struck me as a great game, it was fun for a few hours play on-line but it was nothing revolutionary, in this update the ground and mechanised based combat is pretty much the same but with one major difference, now you can choose famous characters from the films and use jedi powers, first impressions are that this isn't that great.

The first map i played i got cut down twice before i could even work out what was going on i finally worked out that i needed to look down as this little yoda character was hacking at my legs, i smacked him aside and got a few messy kills with `Darth Mal by running into people and hammering the attack button it didn't strike me as very subtle or skillfull it was more a case of who could get the most lightsaber blows in, so not good so far.

The on-line space based combat is fantastic though and the closest thing i can compare it too is rouge leader on the game cube albeit not quite as polished , but with the added bonus that your fighting real people now.

The idea of this mode is to take down more ships than your enemy or to completely destroy there space stations/star destroyers/medical frigates while protecting your own, and i have to say i think this mode has a lot going for it the balance of watching for incoming bombers and fighters while protecting your space stations/star destroyers/medical frigates really adds a level of team work to the proceedings that seem to be lacking from the ground based combat.

Here are my impressions of the fist night of play on-line

The map starts im stood in a hanger on a star destroyer i run over to a tie interceptor and i jump in, how do i fly this thing im thinking? A quick look at the instructions tells me that i press x to lift it off the ground the left stick controls movement the right controls speed and its quite nice and simple to get the hang of.

So I'm off and ships are flying everywhere blasting the crap out of each other i get killed a lot! i pick up the instructions and have a check to see what weapons i have at my disposal "ah a lock on and a secondary fire button now lets see if i can do any better."

I jump back in to a tie and get back into the thick of it with my first kill then another then another i travel across the map and fly my tie straight through the hanger doors and just manage to land it with the tiniest bit of energy left, i run on-board and am met with heavy fire i get to the reactor and after a few trys i lob a few thermal detonators down and knock out there life support then i get shot by an auto turret defence mechanism and its back to the re spawn for another go.

Space fights seem balanced and lag free and run at a pretty good speed, the ships are varied and the maps swap between original and new star wars so one round your fighting with tie fighters and xwings, and the next your taking on droid fighters and its safe to say there all pretty fun to use, Each maps ships tend to be split into classes that have certain types of weapons and different levels of armour too, so before long you will be instictivley heading for the ship that most suits your play style.

this mode turns this game from a might buy to must buy for me and I've been playing it non-stop since i picked it up at the weekend a great sequel which actual dose improve on the original and some great on-line modes that play quite well too.

I have...briefly. Plays pretty much like the full blown versions but it hampered a little by the controls, or the lack of. It's not bad. The Xbox version on the other hand is superb. I wasn't a fan of the original due to the weird FOV angle you had in first person mode, which made it virtually unplayable for me. Thankfully this has been sorted in the sequel. I've only played a small handful of levels so far, but what I have seen has been great. The space battle are also pretty good...even better when you realise you can land on the enemy ship and jump out (that'll teach me to skip the instructions).

Yeah I have played the psp version.
Graphics - Pretty good approximation of the console versions with a reasonable draw distance. Hoth scores well for draw distance but Kashykk doesnt come out as well, probably due to the difference in detail objects on screen. Characters look very nice, and are very close to the console versions. Space levels come out the worst on the graphical side of things. Pretty scrappy looking and loose the epic scope completetly. Also the hangars on the capital ships have no extra areas to explore, just the hangar and thats it.
Sound - Awesome. CD quality soundtrack lifted from the films. If you like the film score you will like the music, simple as. Sound effects are very well done. Identical to console versions.
Gameplay - The problems with the game really come to light here. The default controls map the forward and back and strafe movements to the analog nub and the turn left right, look up down to the face buttons. This makes aiming very tricky unless the opponent is on the same level as you directly in front of you. One of the game modes is Imperial Enforcer. This requires you to kill a set number of Jawas or Ewoks in a give time limit. Due to the short stature of the opponents it gets frustrating trying to look up and down with the triangle and x buttons. I am going to try and map the look to the stick and see if that improves matters. The spaceship controls are better, mapping special manouvers to the square button, speed up to triangle, slow down to x and press and hold circle to roll.
There are options to customise all the controls but it will never match the big console versions, which in something as frantic as battlefront is a bit of problem.
There are less levels that the console versions. There are only 2 space levels and some major ommissions on ground such as Geonosis, Death Star, Utupai and Corusant.
Game modes are also lacking a little. There are some psp exclusive missions, such as the Imperial Enforcer mentioned earlier, and Galactic Conquest mode but there is no central story driven game like the Rise Of The Empire from the console version.

Conclusion - If you love Star Wars you will find a lot to like here, mostly the music and general Star Wars feel. Its just a shame the PSP has only one analog stick. I would give the x box version 10 out of 10 and the PSP version an 8 (bearing in mind the limitations of the machine)

My friend got this on the PS2 this week and we played co-op mode last night.

It was alright, but was frenetic and seemed to involve more button mashing than skill.

The space combat's a great idea, but was more luck than intent.

I like how it tied in with the trilogies, but I think I might give this a miss on the Xbox now.

I'm loving this right now in single player, it's great for just a quick blast. The galactic conquest mode is superb, gives the game a bit of depth and a goal to reach.

I've been playing the PSP version since release day and its superb. The controls are fiddly because of the usual reasons (only one nub) but its a great FPS/shoot em up. You can do most levels on a tube journey - one of the best PSP games yet IMO.

Hmmm, I have it and enjoy the odd blast but I think I'm missing something with it. The controls aren't too bad at all considering and the locations are quite cool (although there aren't very many).

I do seem to be missing something in the battle aspect - the actual gameplay. The actions of the AI all seem to be a bit random. Although there are soldiers around from my team, I feel like I'm playing entirely alone. There's no sense of being in a unit. I'm just running around capturing bases while a lot of stuff happens around me. I feel very detached from what is going on.

Is that normal or am I just not playing it right?

kind of agree yeah, but they do actually contribute to the war.
