No, apparently it doesn't.

Yeah i have heard rumors that the us & jpn versions dont work online together.

The friends codes in the us versions wont work in the jpn version & vice versa. You can go online still but only to other people who have the jpn version. Not really fussed though as ill get the us version soon anyway so i can enjoy from both regions online.
