I'm a topspinner, tend to just use placement to win points, but I've played good ppl online who serve volley, use power from the back, use risk shots, it's all good really - just make your character however you prefer...there isn't really a "best" as far as I know...

Thanks for the help so far, Im still finding this incredibly frustrating. Say I want to hit a diagonal across court, there seems to be no real way of telling how far down the line its going to go, half my returns go across the line and out.
And the method of choosing (finding) games to play is infuriating, why did they make it so obstructive..?

As your stats increase it does become easier - to begin with my player had about half a second where I could hit Red to cross court the ball and keep it in - and that was hit and miss. Now, I can hold sometimes for 3 seconds and still hit the line.
Top game but very hard in the masters - had a epic 5 setter in wimbledon earlier. I won but held off 5 match points with nail biting rallies.

Tonight I won two tournaments, Im into season 3 now so I suppose that Im far too down the line to get a good ranking, but Im definitly improving a lot now. It might seem as though Ive done nothing but moan about the game, but I do think its really good, usually the games which are the most rewarding are the ones you have to work hard at to be good at, such as this. I get the majority of power serves in now, but other than that I dont use risk shots at all.
A few of the training sections are getting to me, the one where you have to use the safe shot to hit the green circle, almost impossible as the coach always returns the shot before its hit the zone. The one for hitting the blue squares for serves is also hard, I always manage to hit the dead bit between the squares, and can only get half the required points currently.
Graphically I love this also, the animation is great, I can see the same mannerisms in the characters as in real life, for example Roddick. Theres also loads going on around the court, its all really polished.

As for the serve training, after being frustrated by it I found that if you just think of it as 6 possibilities it's actually quite easy. What I mean is is that there's top left, top middle, top right, down left, down middle and down right in the zone behind the net where your ball can land. So when the zone is top left, just press top left on the stick all the way, when it's down middle hold back the stick without direction etc. Sorry if this sounds overly simple but for me it took a while before it clicked.

I almost never use risk shots as I can't do it reliably enough. Except for the drop shot with X, if you mess it up it'll still drop over the net (if you hold it too long).
The advanced shots however are essential, the shot you mean is probably LT+X, it's a slice with amazing spin on it. The best ones for me are LT+B for high angle cross court shots and LT+A for hard returns or also cross court shots. If used correctly they are unstoppable.

Two things I found out tonight, first, once you finish a career you cant retain the same player you created, which was a pain as she was kinda hot.. :P .. also, it wasnt until I played an exhibition match that I saw I didnt have access to those advanced shots in career mode, Im sure I 'learnt' them, but the icons didnt appear like they do in exhibition. Im starting over as a guy this time, now I know more Im hopefully gona be able to get 1000 points +. Focusing on speed, fore and backhand this time round.
