    N3: Ninety-Nine Nights

Ohhh... this is a big one (well for 360 games it is)
I've been looking forward to this for a while now and my copy arrived today and up til now I've played for about 30 minutes on it in training. Now I have absolutly no idea what any of the text says, but up til now it hasn't been to much of a barrier (bear in mind though I havn't played the main story mode properly yet.)

The game opens with a FMV sequence, which is nice enough. Once on the title screen there 5 different options which I've figured out to be:

    New Game

    Continue

    Gallery / Shop

    Options

    Training

I've only had a go at training up to now.

You start as Inphyy (the girl with the red dress and armour) and after being shown a few basic moves by Aspharr (the guy in silver and blue) you get to go up against the first set of soldiers which are conveniently waiting for you in nice straight lines. The main attacks commands are located on the X and Y buttons, with A being jump and the right trigger being dash.

While your slashing away at the enemy they drop red orbs which fill up one of the two meters you have. When its full you activate it using B, this basically lets you just go wild for a few seconds with more powerful and prettier attacks. If you hold B down though it slows things right down and zooms in on you, sort of like slow-mo in Viewtiful Joe.

After decimating the first set of enemies are bunch of stronger guys come charging at you. It was hard to tell how many there were of them, but I'd hazard a guess at about 120 or 130 of them on screen. Much like before using X and Y in varying combinations saw them off pretty quick.

After that you see are 2 sets of soldiers which are on your side. Using the left and right bumpers you are call each one, and then issue commands to them with the d-pad. Left and right on the d-pad seem to issue different configurations in which they run, while downs seems to make them follow you.

All of this took place on a small field area outside of a small castle wall. In the background you could see a small village and some windmills. Main problem was, was that there were invisible walls and tiny verges of grass stopping you getting close to anything remotely interesting. The graphics are nice enough, the detail on the enemies is a less than that of the main characters and they seem to be indent-kit at the moment. The environment looks a little worse then the grassy areas in Kameo. I noticed a bit of pop-up though this patches off grass suddenly appearing. Also the colours seem a little washed out and muddy looking, there is a brightness adjuster in the options menu though. I've only had one issue with slow down up til now and that happened when there were only 2 characters on screen, which was a little odd, but at the more action packed times it ran fine.

Hoping that some of these problems aren't in the main game mode, such as the invisible wall and paitently wainting enemies.

Oh forgot to mention the music which is absolutly stunning. Really beautiful and epic orcastrated score with plently of men and women going "ahhhhhh, ohhhh" etc.

So it's not this absolutely terrible turkey that has been suggested?

    Enjoying it?

Just had a go on the first level. It takes place in the same environment as the training level. Again you go up against two sets of enemies, and then you fight a very easy boss. Its striking me that each time you come up against a group of enemies they sort of all swarm together, there dosn't appear to be any individuality as yet.
One cool feature though is that you can jump on the heads of the soldiers as a quick way of getting from one side a group to the other.

In terms of enjoying it.... no not as yet. Its playable.... but not fun.
But one mission in its too early to tell, I'll put a nights worth of play into it and see.
But got to say the music is amazing... best bit so far!

Seems thos reached number 11 in JPN this week according to Famitsu, which is pretty decent for a JPN 360 release. 360 sales are over 3 times what they were last week (which still makes a poxy 4k, but it's an improvement).

Shows that even the 360 could be doing respectibly over there if MS gave JPn players more games they actually want... I'm not talking 3 or 4, but at a similar rate to what westerners get the titles they (supposedly) want. Not really all MS's fault of course.

xboxyde has a couple of gameplay videos up at the moment, it looks nice, but just seems like yet another dynasty warriors clone.

So far I can't see what all the fuss has been about.

Is this game similar to ikusagami?

Looks like it, although I've only seen about 5 seconds of ikusagami gameplay.

Hmm no further updates - I take it extended play hasn't revealed any nice gameplay ???

Regardless, I like the whole hack and slash thing, aswell as the style of the characters on this.

Even if it's a complete turkey, i'll still end up buying it if it's region free.

Surely there has to be something to this game if it's caused such a spike in 360 sales in Japan?

Just curious, but where did all the negativity come from? I thought this was a highly anticipated title? Did it get bad reviews in japan?

                        nintey nine nights

this game is not all bad but has some very annoying things that spoil it.i have just about unlocked all the characters apart from the secret one which needs quite a bit of replay to unlock.
the most annoying thing which is surely the worst bug i have seen in a game so far is that you have to sit through the credits after finishing each characters story or the next ones dont show up,then if you dont play through the new ones first level and save to a new slot and replay another characters level the new ones have vanished and you have to play the characters final level and sit through the credits again, just plain weird.
but after all the complaints and there are more i am still enjoying it and it well worth ago if you like the mindless hack and slash of it all

I saw a gameplay video of this the other day and not a single one of the hundreds of enemies was even trying to attack the player. Is it like that in the full game?

yes your so called allies are pretty useles, they crowd around a single enemy in groups and dont seem to do any damage, you have to kill almost every thing yourself, again though i am still rather enjoying it
