Having played the game for a while now I'm surprised to say I'm enjoying it as much as the first play through on the PS2 if not more. There just seems to be much more to do now with the quest master and guild on your front doorstep and the addition of the farm makes what was sometimes a tedious effort to build new items a tad easier.

They've also got guild quests specifically based around gathering items as a way of solving the suicide mining that occured in the first game. Suicide mining was going to area's rich in resources, ignoring the quest and just mining as much as possible before going and getting killed by a wyvern, there's no longer any need for this.

And I've got a pig with a striped jumper on!!!!! w00t Anyone who played the original will remember the mini-game with the pig, that did er something ....... never could figure out what that was for. But when I saw the pig follow a trader around town and played the mini-game the trader asked me to look after it and now it follows me around. GOTY now in my opinion

Dammit I want a pig too! I'm going to put a bit more time into this before I hit the sack. I cooked my first meat this morning, love the little tune that plays when you cook it perfectly

This has become my perfect travel game for the commute to and from work. Get on train, grab a quest, kill some beasts, run away from wyverns, grab some materials, go back to town, entertain pig, plant some seeds and harvest crops, mine, forage and then rest up ready for the next journey

Alot of this game actually seems to work better with the famed 'dip in, dip out' format than the hard going slog. That said there is nothing like spending a long 50 minutes planning and executing the capture of a wyvern

Playing this myself, I love it, got into much more than the PS2 game, probaly cuz by the time it came out her the online side had died down a bit. I'm only at the first wyvern quest, having a bit of trouble with him, should I just redo some quests and come back to him with better armour and weapons?

if this is a simple conversion then i cant see how you would do something like the powderstone (Arghhhhh) quest or the egg stealing quests on your own as these were all about team work.

for those that dont know about these sort of quests they were some of the most anoying and frustrating challenges ever created in a video game they required one of your team to carry a heavey objects across the entire length of a map a number of times, think egg and spoon race with monsters attaking you.

Carrying objects would stop you from attacking, and greatley reduce the speed you were moveing at leaveing you in the hands of your team mates to protect you. one hit from any of the monsters ment you would drop the item you were carrying and you would have to start again, all very, very, very frustrating.

I loved playing this game but these sort of quests barred your progression and were pretty hard to get anyone to help you with, i spent many a night on the powderstone quest with teams of others all desprate to put it behind them, and some nights they were near imposible to get help on as the rewards for doing them were pretty poor and they were massivley time consumeing, in the end even though i loved the style of the game and loved the hunting element of it, the carrying quest's stopped me playing this game as it barred me from progessing any further makeing the game ultimatley pointless.

i still have my charicter on my mem card, cant bring myself to delete the little fella as i had a few good months on this

Melon_Bread, which wyvern have you come up against? If it's Yian Kut Ku, I'll give you an idea of what I was using when I defeated it:

                  Bone Sword+
                  Protection Piercing
                  Velociprey Gauntlets
                  Velociprey Greaves
                  Chain Mail Armor

I defeated it quite quickly using only the equipment in the storage box along with a potion. Pick a Great Sword for this one because Kut tends to land in area's with other beasts kicking about. I can't remember the area's off the top of my head, but there is one with Velociprey's and Vespoids that you can pretty much clear before engaging Kut. Make sure you carry Felvine so that the Cats can't stitch you up if you fight in their area. Use the flash bombs to stall them if they're irritating you too much, it may stun Kut too.

Basic battle tactics; Run around Kut, keep your distance but don't run too far so you can keep an eye on him and run in when necessary. Wait until he makes an attack and then close range, do an over head slash followed by an uppercut and then roll out of the way. Don't try and combo him like mad, do a couple of strikes and roll away, then circle again, wait for him to attack, run in, rinse, wash and repeat. Keep your health up, don't let it drop below half, don't let your stamina drop too far either, make sure you get some distance before using rations or potions, you'll get an idea for how far Kut travels before attempting attack.

Lebowski, I'm not sure about those gathering quests yet, the only one I've attempted so far is the Forest Los egg which is a relatively easy carrying quest. But I do remember the gathering quest in the Volcano area and trying to slip past the wyvern there (can't remember his name) was a real bitch with a team for one stone, let alone three.

That said, I would just leave those quests, there is honestly plenty of other stuff to do with decent rewards.

I uncovered the training school last night, the idea is after defeating a wyvern you unlock a series of training sessions against them in which you have to use set equipment. So you can pick a Great Sword to fight Kut and are provided with a set of supplies and armor to go with it. The twist is that any extra items you require, you will have to gather, but all of the carving and gathering spots have been mixed. So the herb plant you used for healing now gives out maps, whilst the dung heap you previously ignored now provides a Mega Potion The reward for the Great Sword Kut quest is Guild Tickets, Great Sword Tickets and Kut coins, all useful for making the rarer armor sets and weapons. So it's a neat way of clocking up decent rewards.

can you choose to ignore quests on this then as, the ps2 version forces you to complete all the quests from a spercific level before you go up levels in rank if you had unfinished quests and you ignored them on the ps2 your level topped out and you had to finish all the quests from that level before it opened the next level up's quests.

As i said above i played this for a good few months i was even part of the uk beta for this and played it to death on the ps2, the feeling you get when you bring down one of the massive wyverns is fantastic, i see you have mention the kutku, we used to call this thing's the chicken and though it might seem hard now, you can take these things down in under a minute, wait till you get into the big dragons the aggresion of these things and the amount of energy these things take off rises to silly levels.

funny thing is the main quests i really did enjoy the hunting part is top its just a shame they tagged all the egg carrying crap in there to fill it out a bit really spoilt my enjoyment off it if this is diffrent then maybe i will pick it up.

Cheers Riskbreaker, upgraded my equipment last night and got a bit further with him, I shall try your tactics tonight, you really have to know when to run in this game no lost pride in legging it if your in trouble.

Combat at first is tricky but it really rewards practice I was re-doing some of the other quests for items and monsters that gave me problems before a now falling much easier. Such a shame they didnt go the whole hog and get this working online as well it would of been even more amazing.

No you're right mate, if you're aiming to bring your HR up you have no choice but to finish all the quests. Which one are you stuck on? If I remember right the Swamp one is soloable but difficult, whereas the Volcano is impossible if Gravious ever locates himself outside the volcano as you simply can't get away from him.

I got up to HR 15 with the US version so I've defeated Lao-Shun, but never got as far as fighting Fatalis. I'm pretty sure the only gathering quest that gave me real grief was the volcano one, if you can get that out the way you should be ok.

I'd offer to help you do it, but I don't think US and UK versions can play on the same servers

Grab a wi-fi connection and X-link Kai Alternatively grab the PS2 version, it's probably in a few bargain bins by now, that said, aside from the online mode the PSP version is superior in every way, the single player is much more compelling this time around.

Personally I praying MH2 gets a US release

Hmm, has anybody here had any luck with getting this working on X-Link Kai? And if so, what kind of equipment are you using?

I'd love to get this going online.

Thourght id resurect this thread from the dead is ive recently been playing this again.

However i still cant get anywhere near taking a wryvern down solo. Not even a Kut-Ku .

Ive got an great katana that does over 500 damage and all my armor is quite good. I use 2 large barell bombs on the bastard, and got a good 40-50 hits with my katana on the sod and they just dont moove. (Level 2, first Kut-Ku mission im trying to do)

                            Any tips guys?

hmm for the kutku quest i used 3 pitfall traps (spider web + ivy -> net , net + traptool -> pitfalltrap ) and the large barrel bombs
the most im portant thing is probably to circle around the "chicken" and strike only when it stumbles then immidiatly evade

im sort of having a love hate relationship with this, its so sad imagining how awsome this game could have become if it had decent controls and camera

As Sanakan said, it's all about evasion. You need to watch the boss attack patterns and only attack when they go out on a limb or have their back to you. Don't instigate a large combo with the slower weapons (of which the katana is one) unless you are really confident they will succeed i.e. when the enemy is down, or you will get punished.

Also, keep your weapons sharp. Blunt weapons are useless.

Wait till you meet the uber Kut
