New super mario is a better platformer than peach no doubt.... peach has the nintendo magic but is not as creative or fun as a mario game tbh

Well, Super Princess Peach is a fun game. But New SMB absolutely leaves it in the dust; it's in a different league.

Having finished the last castle yesterday, I'm now going to get the other worlds and levels I missed.

It doesn't really matter to the game as a whole, but the way the game opens up doesn't seem right to me. For example, unless you get the cannons right away, they are completely useless. They are obviously mirroring the warp points in SMB but in that they had a purpose given that you couldn't save in SMB and had to complete it in one go. And with the missed levels and two whole worlds, it feels there is nothing really to gain except getting to play them. The fact that I've reached the end at that stage makes them feel like almost like watching deleted scenes on a dvd. They're still enjoyable but the journey feels over already.

And, of course, the lack of saving on the first play through is crazy. Yeah you can say it would make the game too easy but I don't buy that. You still have to get through the levels one by one, save or no save. The GBA versions of SMW and SMB3 had saving after every stage and they were still bloody hard - the difficulty lay in the levels, not limiting the saves. Even in the originals, you would end up with so many lives in those games that it wasn't about the fear of having to do the whole thing over again. It was about getting throught that next stage. And all handheld games should have convenient save points and preferably a quick save feature. I don't want to have to leave my DS in sleep mode if it means I can't change the game.

But that's just the structure of the game. The levels themselves, I adore. They really captured something special and, you know, after all this time I wasn't sure they could. The classic 2D Marios are on such a pedestal and for good reason. I doubted that this could reach those heights but I think it has. It's easily a worthy addition to the Mario Hall of Fame and I would say it's my fourth favourite Mario game. In any other game series, placing fourth wouldn't seem so great but when you're talking of games of this standard I think fourth is pretty damn good.

I picked this up on Saturday and I`ll have to say that I love this game, it`s great.

Had a few issues at home so not had much chance to play it but unfortunately I finished it yesterday with all coins, secret paths found and

            wallpaper bought

to give me the 3 star ranking.

I`m gutted that it was over so quickly, especially after waiting about 12 years for it but I`ll defo pick it up and play it again.

Class game, if not a little short.

PS: It was a bit annoying though when at some points of the game you had to have a shell suit or mini shroom to get a coin or pathway but I think it can be forgiven 8)

I'm not finding this as easy as most, keep dying in stupid ways. Maybe I'm just not used to the way mario controls, not taking my time or maybe I'm just rubbish at it!

Yeah, that reminded me of the monster from Super Metroid that you send into the lava and I`m sure that Bowser makes the same sound rather than his normal Bowser roar.

Does anyone remember the old "firework" trick on SMB where if you jumped on the flagpole at a certain time and you got fireworks?

I might be stating the obvious but if there is anyone struggling with NSMB and the 1up shroom houses aren`t giving you enough lives,

jump on the flagpole at any height when the counter is at either x44, x55 or x66 and a 1up shroom house will appear at the 1st spot of the world map. You can do this as many times as you like.

Also another intersting tip, although not 100% guranteed. I found that when in the 1up house for at least the 1st 3 worlds,

if you hit blocks 1, 2, 5 and 6 first (in that order), you have a very good chance of not getting the Bowser card in those 4 blocks.

That worked for me 95% of the time but the pattern altered from about W4 onwards.

Stick at it cutmymilk, you`ll get there fella! 8)

Also replaying stage 1-1 is a great way of getting lives. You can get three green mushrooms easily by stomping through it. There are loads of coins too so it's not long before you get another for those. In terms of controls, he's just a little slippery. I think I did myself a favour by replaying the original SMB as he's pretty slidey in that one too. Although for all of the ease of the other stages, I wasn't able to coast through World 8. I spent as much play time on World 8 as it took to get there.

                    Another tip.......

There are quite a few levels where a mini shroom is required to get a hidden coin or new pathway.

When a mini shroom is needed, just goto W1-4 and pick one up from there guarenteed. The level can also be completed very quickly

You could go into W1-4 with no item held, complete the level twice and end up with a mini shroom in reserve. That is probably the easiest way to have a mini shroom in reserve making the boss battle where you need to be mini at the end easier, although I didn it the hard way!

Is there anything else unlockable that anyone knows of?
                      Unfortunately

there is only wallpaper for you to purchase but there is a special wallpaper for you to buy if you get all the coins. There is also the ability to save anytime, have infinate items and lives aswell but, you will need to buy all the wallpapers if you want a 3 star ranking, otherwise you`ll just have 2 stars.

This is where I think that some opinions concerning this game from the more skilled Mario players are maybe a little unfair. I am nowhere near completely finishing the game despite having had it for rather longer than you, and I'm no novice to Mario! Completing the initial run was a breeze, sure, but getting all the secrets has not been so straightforward. I think that for the majority of gamers, it will (and is taking) more than a week to get everything!

By the way, regarding the flagpole at the end of each stage:

if you hit the flagpole when it says x11, x22 or x33, you'll get a power-up Toad House; if you hit it at x44, x55 or x66, you'll get a 1up house; and if you hit it at x77, x88 or x99 you'll get a Mega Mushroom house

That`s a fair point, I was just telling it how I saw it from my individual point of view, which happens a lot on the first play threads here I`ve noticed. Although that is not a really bad thing, it may help to put people off having a look at a game that they otherwise would get based on us posting here and saying that it was a piece of piss. That would be a shame as regardless of how easy/hard this game is, it is a great game and all fans of Mario should have the oppertunity to play it.

FACT! Mario games are not difficult, they appeal to people of all ages and skill levels. The games can be completed fairly easily but the real challange as always lies in the finding of the secrets, in the case of NSMB coins/hidden paths/hidden worlds.

Everyone should play this game, it has that little bit of Miyamoto magic packed into every cart!8)

Oh, and I forgot to mention when talking about the end of stage flagpoles that it's really cool

how, when you get the last two digits of the time the same as I described above, you get the original Super Mario Bros end of level music!

                              I think that happens when

you get 111, 222, 333 or 444. You will then get the truly original SMB music.

I'm fairly sure it happens in all cases -- I'll just check and compare.

Edit: Yep, it does indeed - the

music is identical (the SMB1 end of level theme, or an extremely close approximation using the DS sound hardware) no matter whether the last two digits of the remaining time are 11, 22, 33 (these three get you the power-up house), 44, 55, 66 (for lives), 77, 88, or 99 (for Mega Mushrooms). Unless of course they are 00, in which case you get nowt!
