shinobido: way of the ninja - PS2 PAL

picked this up today and have spent a couple of hours with it

its a ninja game by acquire who did the original tenchu

i should state now that if you didn't like tenchu (like you're a pirate or something) you will not glean any enjoyment from this

its basically exactly the same except not as solid

you play a ninja called crow who looks like a total bad ass, as all ninjas are

you creep and sneak around levels silently killing hapless guards and such like

it is almost exactly the same as playing tenchu, there is even the exact same grapple

you progress through the game by accepting missions given to you by three rival lords. you are looking for your lost soul which has been captured in a stone and then smashed, each lord will offer to help you find it and your allegiance will lead down different paths.

these means you can do lots of missions by working for all of them. the missions are unlike tenchu as they are more free form as the environments are re used for the levels. this isn't too bad as there are various mission types - assassination, kill everyone, collect items, deliver a package etc. and each time you play a level the enemy layout is different and there is a different objective

the actual gameplay is weaker than the pinnacle of the tenchu series wrath of darkness. his jumping is limp and you really miss the double jump. he can however wall run and jump but the controls are twitchy and you never quite know what he's going to do to start with but you get used to it.

the camera is weak and hops about a bit but the lock on button helps out with keeping track of enemies

the combat is crappy as well. but if you want decent combat you never go near a tenchu game

the most annoying thing about the game is the controls. the grapple should be assigned purely to a face button but instead you have to hold either l2 or r2 and then hold the face button and hold r1 to stay in stealth mode. its frustrating

the ai is basic, they patrol, they attack on sight, nothing special

overall its an alright game but is meant for fans of tenchu, it is certainly not a mainstream game.

i think assassin's creed is going to set a new benchmark for ninja style games with its heavy reliance on context moves. i'd really like to play a ninja game where you can focus on being a badass rather than struggling with a camera and frustrating controls.

if you like tenchu then you can get into this but anyone else will hate it

oh and the voice overs are horrendous, ****ing terrible british actors. but its to be expected since sony europe are publishing it

Thanks, not sure I totally understand what your getting at cos you're sort of implying the tenchu games only had niche appeal, but I thought the original was universally adored by everyone?

Either way I think I'll love this, Way of the Samurai is one of my favourite PS2 games too.

well i'm the only person i know who likes tenchu, none of my friends seem to like it, *FOOLS*

i guess i mean that because the actual mechanics don't work as well as they do in tenchu, i reckon its only the fans that will press on with it and get through the initial barrier of weak controls. i think the controls, camera and voice overs will put off a lot of people

      i'm still enjoying though
