I've written about this a little bit in a different Chrome Hounds thread but I thought I may as well start a proper First Play thread. I'm sure others will update this with my better and more insightful views soon, but might as well get the ball rolling
About two hours after I?d ordered the Japanese version Chrome Hounds on impulse (I mean it was an impulse purchase, not that I bought it from a shop called impulse
) I found out that there was a demo available of it on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Then read a lot of feedback on that the demo was crap and the game wasn?t worth buying!
Luckily, despite all the negative comments, I?ve found Chrome Hounds to be a decent game. I also got the unexpected bonus of a snazzy free faceplate for my Xbox 360, which only comes with the Japanese version of the game (I think).
For those who don?t know, the basic idea of the game is this: you command big customisable robots (or Chrome Hounds) and move them around the battlefield blowing up other big customisable robots
There?s a back story which involves a third world war and all that kinda stuff, but basically it?s a 3D robot shooter.
So far I?ve only completed the solider arc in story mode. Basically the one player game is spilt up into six campaigns with seven missions in each. Each concentrates on a different kind of mission (general solider, scout, sniper, etc.) and there are two easy, two medium, and two hard difficulty campaigns.
A lot of the complaints about the demo were that it was too slow and there were hardly any enemies. Firstly, you?re a huge robot, you should be slow
Having said that, there are various different types of robot including ones that are faster than usual. Secondly, the further you get into a campaign, the harder the missions get, and the more enemies there are! The demo was of earlier, easier levels, I believe. Anyway, by the later missions of the first campaign I was really enjoying it.
The graphics for the most part seem a bit functional, but the robots themselves look very good. It also looks great when you have a load of enemies on screen at once with tons of explosions and smoke everywhere. The game also looks very nice when you play using the gun camera (first person) mode, as the use a nice? umm? ?looking through the cockpit of a huge robot? effect on the screen
So, yes, despite the negativity that surrounded the demo, I?d recommend renting the full game and giving it a try to see if you like it. I certainly don?t think I?ve wasted my ?35 and I haven?t even touched the hound customisation or online multiplayer aspect of the game yet (and they?re supposed to be the best parts).
