    Miami Vice PSP

Saw this in a local indie at lunch and had some spare cash so I thought I'd give it a go. I've done the first 3-4 levels so far and I have to say it's actually pretty good, especially for a movie tie-in. The action so far has been standard run-and-gun stuff, with heavy use of cover, but pulled off really well. There's been no special objectives as of yet, just blast your way to the end of the level.

There's various things to look out for in the levels though, one is packs of narcotics and the other is memory sticks. Narcotics can be sold to drug dealers or used to bribe informants, which will tell you the locations of the drugs, memory sticks, or where to disable the security cameras in the next mission. The memory sticks can be hacked back at HQ (which is where you save and withdraw/depsoit your drugs haul) by playing a little Every Extend rip-off which will unlock new weapon upgrades. At the end of each level you're also given a respect bonus based on what types of weapons you used and how many health packs you applied, amongst other stuff like what suit you were wearing (?!?). To begin with there didn't seem to be any reasoning behind the respect rating until I unlocked a drugs baron, who will give you a higher price for your stash. He will only see you if you have a high enough rating, however, it's not quite as easy as seeing one of the regular drug dealers. You basically enter a little mini-game where you must keep a marker between two points on a power bar (it's a little like the balancing mechanics in the Tony Hawk games) as you try and pimp talk your way to a sweet sale, the better you do the better the price you get for the drugs.

Visually the game is pretty good, definitely looks better in motion than the screenshots I've seen. It's not quite as detailed as say Syphon Filter, but it makes up for it with nice lighting.

Control wise, the developers have opted not to go with the strafe/look combination as it just doesn't work well without a second analogue stick. Instead you run around using the analog-nub and shoot use an aim button for an over-the-shoulder view and then you can shoot, but due to the nature of the gameplay it works as you're usually shooting from behind cover.

    No one else playing this?

I'm a few more levels into it and still enjoying things. I've also done a couple of boat missions, which are pretty basic - get from A-to-B and destroy everything in your way - but a fun diversion. I think I'm over halfway now and it's looking like a game I won't play again once completed.

Have only had chance to give it a quick play but from the first level it seems like its going to be a good game, as soon as you get used to the aiming system, which does feel a little alien at first it all works quite well!

The aiming system isn't quite as smooth as I thought it would be, and the camera being fixed is a bit of a pain after playing 3rd person games on a console. PSP shows its badness when its comes to this sort of thing because it doesn't have a second analog stick.

I enjoyed the first mission, thought it was done well and played well, but the map afterwards just pissed me off, it doesn't really explain what to do very well - yes yes I am a double agent, but do I need to go and visit all these people, do I need to hack the flashram? You lose a day everytime you visit someone, so is it worth it? How tight is the time limit? It hardly explains itself very well and informs you of the importance of dealing/hacking etc.. And what is the deal with the weird Every Extend section for hacking? Annoying as hell on its 3rd phase. I wont be bothering with that again.

Overall it seems alright, but yet again its something could of worked much better on PlayStation2, but instead we get a PSP version with an annoying camera. Oh well, it was free so cannot complain too much.
