Def Jam: Fight for NY: The Takeover

I got this a few days ago on a whim for PSP and was waiting for a First Play thread to show up. That didn't happen so here it is.

I've never played a Def Jam game before so I can't compare but, as far as I know, this is a port of a sequel or an update of a port of a sequel. Something like that anyway. I'm not quite sure why I bought it - the reason I never played the others is because I was pretty sure they'd be rubbish. I mean, how good can you expect a rap-licensed wrestling-inspired game be?

Well, I have to say I'm bloody impressed. The fighting in this is just so rewarding - I can't quite stress that enough. Yeah, it's a button masher mostly. No, it doesn't require massive amount of skill to play. But, man, I don't think I've ever played a fighting game where I really feel like I'm actually beating the living **** out of someone. This isn't Tekken's fancy move after fancy move until the life bar goes down. No, in this I'm beating the crap out of Sean Paul until he just can't bear to get up any more. I'm beginning to think that, when it comes to 3D fighters, I've been playing the wrong ones. There could be way more like this and I've let them pass me by. The fighting in this game is so satisfying. I even like to draw the fights out so I can see if I can take the beating.

The line-up is great if you have a remote hip-hop interest. It's such an ego trip for these guys and it's funny to think of some of them as fighters but, whatever way this is put together, it works. Also getting to crack Sean Paul's skull is great. I'm disappointed Nate Dogg isn't in it to get the 213 thing going on but, hey, you can't have everyone. As it is, I had no idea that there were this many big names in the game.

Oh, and anything with Danny Trejo in it is a must-buy.

    And Rollins.

There's a story mode. The story is cack and really just serves to bridge the fights but building up your character works surprisingly well. I started out with a doofus and now he looks like a badass.

Again, if you're into hip-hop, the soundtrack's not bad. Not fantastic and there are only about 18 or so tracks in here I think but I guess that's more than an average album. Graphics are fine but some of it is quite dark which inevitably means a smeary PSP screen.

Overall, I'm impressed. Way more than I thought I would be. I'm really enjoying this.

Westsiiiiiiide indeed. I picked this up at the weekend but unfortunately haven't had enough time to give it a good whirl yet. Played a few games and it felt like it's bigger brother too me, which I absolutely loved. Can't wait to put it some game time on my hols next week.
